Free Seagate Backup Software Available Online [Posted on 2007-05-15] I purchased this Seagate hard drive and have been extremely pleased with it. It is indeed virtually silent and blazingly fast. It backed up 18 GB in 12 minutes for me. It also was recognized in about 1 second by my computer after I connected to the USB port, so there is no down time when using it.
It is true that it comes with no software, which is puzzling and a little annoying. However, there is an easy resolution. Go to Seagate's web site and download their free, excellent DiscWizard software. You'll need a broadband connection to do it because the file is 100 MB, but the software is extremely easy to use and enables you to backup software more easily than drag and drop, especially if you wish to back up your whole computer. You can also use the software for other functions, like creating a second disk drive. The software was extremely easy to install and to use once downloaded, although there is one trick: the software requires at least one Seagate hard drive present on your computer before downloading or before working once downloaded. But as long as the external Seagate hard drive is hooked into the USB port you'll have no problem.
I hope this helps! It's a cheap but excellent product.
Good Product [Posted on 2007-05-15] I had no problems. I was attracted to the great deal this prodct offered and thought I might have to sacrifice something in the process but I really didn't. It works great!
Solid as a Rock! [Posted on 2007-09-24] We were lucky to find another of this model through Amazon (last years model), we own 2 others as well, this one is for my son's dorm room. My son has a laptop and the smaller drives use 1 or 2 USB ports (1 for info, 1 for power) to run them correctly, and most Manufacturers suggest using the computer's ports versus a 'powered hub' ports. There are other external hard drives out there that have more capacity for the dollar, but this one is built like a brick house, runs flawlessly, and doesn't have all the annoying built-in software packages now included on the newer versions. Seagate is the best, PERIOD! They have the best hub design there is out there which is the cause of most hard drives failures....no other brand can run as long without error codes or complete failure causing the loss of delicate information. We use it for music, photos, and back-up. Simple drag & drop operation....no formatting issues at all. If you can find one of these...BUY IT!
Great external hard drive... still works great after 1 year! [Posted on 2008-06-12] I purchased this last year to back up files to, but it's become even more valuable as I have toted it back and forth to work on occasion or hooked it up to one of our three laptops and desktop on various occasions. It's worked great with Windows XP, Vista, and even Tablet PC edition. I can't complain. It does what I want and I have tons of space to keep all my files. Very pleased!
