Works good for Mac [Posted on 2008-03-24] I've had my drive about 6 months now and it has been working well. It operates fairly quietly and performs well with the FireWire interface. I leave it plugged into my Intel iMac, and it sleeps and turns on automatically, so I don't have to worry about using the power button, which other folks have apparently had problems with.
The software and services from Seagate that let you make the FreeAgent Pro virtually accessible from any computer don't work on a Mac. As I use this drive primarily for backups and Mac OS X Leopard's Time Machine feature, I wasn't concerned about not using Seagate's software. I was more interested in getting a reliable Mac compatible drive, and this seems to have fit the bill.
Cool looking, 5 year warranty, stays cool, stays quiet, USB 2 [Posted on 2008-04-07] I've been in computer IT for 7 years and this is a nice product. Only gets warm, is virtually silent, glows amber. It has a raised relief, touch sensitive power button. You can enable or disable the lighting through the Seagate software. I removed the Seagate installed software, as I don't need the auto-backup function. This is the "Pro" version of the FreeAgent which carries a 5 year warranty, you can't beat it.
Eaxctly what I needed [Posted on 2008-04-12] When I switched to Mac from PC .. I needed a reliable backup.. I had been using Carbonite (the online storage site). After checking out the online options for the Mac I decided to go with an external hard drive. While the Seagate Free Agent Pro contains only PC software .. it didn't matter. I started Time Machine, it recognized the drive and I haven't thought about it since. It quietly and efficiently saves everything on my Mac. And the FireWire connection is very fast. It never interferes with anything else I'm doing.
So far, so good. [Posted on 2008-04-29] Have had for 4 or 5 days. Using the USB port, it backs up fast, is quiet, have not used the FireWire or eSATA ports yet. No problem with turning the light(s) off and on as others have reported. On/off switch works fine as well. The base gets warm as expected, not hot as others reported with theirs. Have no interest in using the backup software. I just send files over. Price is right for a half Terabyte drive, heck we paid $270 for a WD 340 meg drive in 1995 :>
No complaints here.
so far so good [Posted on 2008-05-08] the setup was a round-about. the inadequate booklet does not describe that you need to set up the hard drive in the macs' disc utility and i had to utilize the online trouble shooting in order to get the hard drive to work on the mac. The mac will not be able to utilize the drive until you do this. the manual should assume little to no computer maintenance experience and explain this. do your research in advance and do not expect to have it up and running quickly if you are not familiar with the inner workings. doable for the average user but takes some work.
