Good while it works [Posted on 2008-05-30] Head crash at nine months. Hard drive had four fans to keep it cool, so was operating just above room temperature. Zero shocks to the drive (unless they occurred in shipping before I got it, of course). I wonder if these are designed based on Maxtor mechanisms (some of which were prone to heads breaking off due to a design flaw). Either way, my trust in Seagate drives just went way down....
It sounded like low frequency hum and high frequency whine as the head etched a groove in the media. By the time the dd to clone the drive to a spare was finished, the drive was completely unreadable (including the parts that I'd already read).
Very Very LOUD [Posted on 2008-05-31] I can't believe how loud this drive is. It's very difficult to concentrate on editing with this thing screaming after every thing I do. Opening a browser or simply exploring the C drive is deafening. Now some applications are freezing. I'm returning this.
A little more effort than expected, but works. [Posted on 2008-06-06] I installed the Seagate 500Gb SATA using Windows XP Pro x64. Installing the hardware was easy enough as all cables were included. The XP installer didn't recognize the drive, so I added an older 80Gb ATA drive and installed XP on that. From there, I ran the Seagate installer disc, and voila, the Seagate drive showed up. I'm still putting my new system through its paces, so we'll see how it fares as I add software.
Not bad for the price... [Posted on 2008-06-12] I got one of these drives, for about 30 bucks cheaper than Amazon has it here, and it is a bit loud, but other than that, not a single problem at all.
In fact, I have never really had a problem with any Seagate items that I have bought and always they are a decent price. I would recommend this and reading the reviews of other people saying that their's failed, they is too bad. I am sure that they are not the most amazing or consistent company on the planet and that is too bad for the customers that got bum hard drives, but in my experience, I have not had an issue at all.
5 stars but be careful that you get what you paid for [Posted on 2008-06-30] Bought four of these to use in a RAID. All four of the boxes had PN: 98D648 - 550 on the box. When I installed one of the drives it was smaller than the others. PN on smaller drive's label was 98J146 - 308 and it was called a Barracuda 7200.10. Larger drives were Barracuda 7200.11 9BX154 - 303 on the drive label. Returned it and will check the replacement when it arrives.
7/3/08 Received replacement drive and it was Barracuda 7200.11 9BX154 - 303.
