Great unit [Posted on 2008-03-30] I found this unit to be just what I needed. Easy to set up and get started, especially for a "non-techy" computer user. I expect to have a huge photo album on it, as well as a condensed version of the same to put on DVDs, as well as back up for my main internal hard drive.
Works fine and a great value [Posted on 2008-04-06] I purchased this and got a lot more than I expected for the price. I wanted to back up my files easily and quickly. It certainly does that. I set it to back up my files every day and am relieved in knowing that I will not lose any of them. If I want to back up more frequently, all I need do is to touch the bar and it'll back up. Before, I had been using cds and dvds to create back ups... but I didn't have daily back ups... now I do. Highly recommended.
Excellent! [Posted on 2008-04-09] I definitely recommend this hard drive!
It works to the full potential and the legacy of Seagate still continues. I used Seagate products before and always get a great performance out of them. And with this one there is not difference.
Straightforward backup device -- no fuss, effective peripheral at modest price!! [Posted on 2008-04-14] As our files of personal Word & Excel docs, printable music scores, and mp3 collection have grown sizable (40G or so), we decided it was high time to add an external drive to contain backups should the worst occur and we lose our regular internal hard drive somehow. We ordered the Maxtor One Touch 4 for its very reasonable cost per gig and simple operation. It installed easily and quickly, flawless out of the box. Perhaps the process by which you define your "regularly" scheduled backup(s) could be a bit more intuitive (or what little "manual" enclosed on the CD there is, be a bit more illustrative), but we soon figured out both how to do one-time saves of relatively large but mostly static folders, as well as how to put the more dynamic folders we wanted to backup regularly to a daily or weekly schedule. What's nice is that only files that have changed since the prior backup are actually transferred, so there is some modicum of intelligence and efficiency with the process. Incidentally, the transfer rate at USB2 speeds is plenty fast enough, even if you're sitting there "watching", which usually we're not.
The actual "one touch" feature is merely a manual instigation of your regular backup prescription, but that might be useful if you just concluded several hours of work, and wanted a backup right now instead of (say) several days later at the regular time. A "backup log" is written to a notepad file each time a backup is executed, specifying how many files were backed up, at what date and time, and what files were ignored (mostly just temp files and other Windows-specific esoterica) because they are not supported by the standard backup process.
Seams to us this device is just about perfect for someone wanting a no-fuss backup procedure at a reasonable price.
warning! [Posted on 2008-05-03] Be careful when unplugging this piece of junk or when starting up your computer. My files were not lossed but many were "orphaned" by this drive and this when I go to open the file (ex: music cd) there are huge gaps in the file. I use this one as a back up. Piece of junk. Buy a Lacie, they are much more reliable.
