I got it for 5 bucks at Gamestop. [Posted on 2006-05-21] Best 5 dollars I've ever spent. I continue to LAN this game and play it inbetween more serious games (no pun intended), and it's already been a few years. Serious Sam is kind of a kick back to Doom. The graphics are colorful, the game is full of humor, and the levels are huge, sprawling environments (mostly outdoors), filled to the brim with hundreds of enemies. The idea - shoot things. You'll have quite a hefty arsenal: shotguns, rocket launchers, a canon...this game becomes quite intense when you have a hundred enemies swarming you. This is easily one of the best First Person Shooters to come out ever. It works because it's simple, and on a rare occassion, simplicity actually makes the game as good as it is.
Frantic Shooter Fun [Posted on 2006-06-23] "Serious Sam" makes no pretenses about what it's supposed to be: it's a run and gun shooter that really only pays lip-service to its "story." But, that's OK, because it's executed so well that it's a blast to play if you just want something quick and brainless with which to occupy your time.
The graphics are beautiful and no other shooter I've seen does wide open spaces as well. Monsters attack en masse, and I don't mean four or five at a time--you can literally be swarmed by scores of beasties. Fortunately, the weapons are up to the task. There's standard shooter fare, like a knife, a pistol, and a shotgun, but the heavy hitters, like the chain gun can really chew through ammo. It's a good thing too, you need heavy firepower to survive the firefights in Serious Sam.
Since the game is rated "Mature", it's obviously not for children, but if you're just getting into first-person shooters, or you're a veteran looking for some old-school (say "Doom") action, Serious Sam should be right up your alley.
Focused game design [Posted on 2006-07-05] There's no pretense of a complex story, no neo-intellectual riddles or puzzles to solve. The developers quite simply knew what they wanted and executed it perfectly: a silly, stylish, fast, beautiful 3-D shooter. Serious Sam and the Second Encounter both ran flawlessly on my mediocre machine at 1024 resolution. I don't want to overstate this but I was astounded at the sheer number of individual characters moving (rapidly) on screen at once with no slowdown or clipping sounds. Possibly, to really appreciate this you need to have played some poorly coded resource-gobbling dogs that eat frames and chop sound effects with just slight onscreen detail. Even if you haven't, it will be apparent what a clean-coded masterpiece Serious Sam is. Bravo, CroTeam!
I can't quite give it 5 stars, as each of the two games becomes a bit repetitive after the 2/3 point. But, the Gold package is an undeniable steal considering the sheer quantity of alien-splatting fun of SS and SS:SE.
one of the berrer shooters [Posted on 2006-09-12] I just got a new XP machine & my old DOS shooters, like Doom, don't work well on it (if anyone knows how to get such game working, please try to contact me)
I even had trouble with Sam crashing until I ran it on it's safe mode. It even has simple cheat codes.
Fun FPS! [Posted on 2007-11-26] This is great fun! The graphics are out dated but still if you like FPS you might consider getting Serious Sam Gold. Fast action...fast saves...fast restores...mindless blasting.
