Sid Meier = Evil Genius [Posted on 2004-11-24]
Sid Meier's Pirates! is another rock of computer crack that can't be put down once you start. It's true to the original 1987 version, with some additions and a few things left out.

Your story starts as an 8 year old, when an evil Marquis takes your family into bondage. You escape, and ten years later begin your career as an able seaman. Through a twist of fate, you end up in control of the ship, and sail into a port to talk to a governor who gives you a letter of marque or a mission, and explains the current state of politics.

The gameplay is better than the original. The control system still uses the number pad, which is better than the mouse for minute steering adjustments. The graphics are done in a cartoonish 3D style which fits the genre well. The only thing missing from the original that I have noticed so far is that you don't have to take a sun sight, which wasn't very fun anyway.

The courting system can be a bit repetitive, as it uses a DDR type "hit this button in sequence" mode to impress women (much like GTA:San Andreas has). You can opt out of the dance if you are eager to get back to the hacking and slashing bits.

The hand-to-hand combat system is almost exactly an update of the original game, with a lot of 3D pre-set moves added. If you want a sword fighting game, there are better ones out there. This game, however, is a great mix of many genres. I highly recommend it for people who don't need sleep.

This Game should be game of the year! [Posted on 2004-12-14]
This game is great. I just love unleashing a broadside right into the enemy ship. I recommend this game to anyone. It is great fun and very addicting. You have got to play this one.

Guess I'll be the only complainer, but here goes:
Game Play on the high seas: Excellent, 5+ stars. Lots of fun! Thoroughly enjoyable!
Sword Fights & Dancing: Miserable, -1 star. Didn't work for me (no hand-eye coordination, I guess). No fun and, as far as I'm concerned, did not add anything to the game.

First Sid Meier game I've ever had a problem with. And no, I never played the first Pirates.

Adventure on the High Seas [Posted on 2005-07-09]
I'm a girl who loves a good pirate story, so I couldn't pass up this game, and I've been extremely pleased with it.

You play as the captain of the pirate sloop Revenge (both name and type of ship can change as you capture other ships) and you start off by swearing alliance with one of four nationalities: English, Spanish, French, or Dutch. By no means do you have to be any nicer to this country than the rest of them. You can pillage whomever you please, both cities and ships. It's really a very fun game tactically, as your actions and who you attack affect the different towns and ships actions towards you.

If you so please, you can also woo governor's daughters and go to balls, but that is not necessary to gameplay. And in case you get bored of pillaging (never!) there's also nine of the deadliest pirates ever patrolling around whom you can challenge, treasure maps, and someone has kidnapped various members of your family.

Everytime you split the plunder you can change your level, either going up if you've been very successful lately, or going down if things have been a bit rough, which is nice. Also, your character ages as time goes on, which is a fantastic bit of realism.

I had some problems with the graphics and getting the game to run initially, but it was easily cleared up by the very friendly Atari tech support and their message boards.

I highly recommend this game!
