Great product but read directions [Posted on 2008-08-17] The item was exactly as described in new condition including the power adapter the actual machine works perfectly, however be careful to follow the instructions when cleaning. I had bought the automatic cleaner for my girlfriend because a few of her dvds skipped and she insisted on doing the first run but she over sprayed the disc and then dried it using the blue cloth instead of the buffing square as recommended. Because of that the dvd refused to read in any player and was saying it's coded for another region and she was going to make me buy another dvd and return the cleaner until i read the instructions did it correctly and it worked perfectly. So it's a great product but you should follow the directions before returning or worrying your dvd is destroyed.
What Happened [Posted on 2008-08-21] I purchased this item based on the reviews. Being a little lazy, I wanted to save some time in fixing any scratches that came up on my cds and dvds. I read the instructions, spray my scratched dvd with the solution and put it in the machine. Not only did the scratches not come out, the disc was scoured and unplayable in any of my dvd players--sorry Netflix. Maybe I got a bad one, but this is being returned.
Fixed our Wii game perfectly! [Posted on 2008-08-23] We were just sick when our kids scratched their favorite Wii game. Those games aren't cheap and we were sure we were out the $49.99 we paid for the game. After reading all the reviews for skipDr Premier, we decided to try it out.
It worked PERFECTLY! We were amazed.
After we saw what it could do, we fixed a couple of movie DVDs that the kids had gotten a hold of. The skipDr worked like a charm. Definitely worth the money if you have kids who get their hands on EVERYTHING!
It was easy to use, quick, and worked perfectly. Make sure to read the back of the instructions before use, as there are some tips that you will need to know. Also, ours came with the AC Adapter free, we didn't have to pay anything to get one.
skipdr 10185 [Posted on 2008-08-24] I didn't even know such a product existed. I usually just throw out any discs that didn't work anymore. However, when my son's guitar hero wasn't reading and cleaning it didn't help, I figure, I had nothing to lose, plus I had other discs that didn't work. I actually had to run the disc twice but amazingly, it was fixed!!! I had some movies that were skipping, but after running it through even 3 times it still freeze frames, but in different spots. I figure I have nothing to lose, I'll just try it a few more times. I'm sure for superficial scratches it will work, and for the price, it is worth the investment.
Works great. Have recovered movie discs, audio discs, home "burned" discs. [Posted on 2008-08-24] I maintain over 300 computers for one of my clients.
Each had a CDRW or DVD-RW.
Needless to say, I get requests at least monthly, to assist with
data recovery from CD and/or DVD media.
As another reviewer mentioned, you can only recover discs that are scrathed on the play-side (if the label, and the foil below it, get scratched; buffing is NOT going to help)
This device works great for surface scratches to the PLAY-SIDE of the disc.
Small scratches can be fixed with maybe a single buffing.
Deeper scratches may require a few more buffings in this device.
NOTE 1: Buffing should be from the inside (center) toward the outside (edge). Or 90 degrees to the center. That is where a buffing unit works great vs hand buffing.
NEVER buff in parallel to the play tracks!
NOTE 2: Repair can be done manually.
Some people have repaired disc media with just a cream polish and some elbow grease. One recommended polish is BRASSO. Google CD repair and you'll find other polishes also mentioned.
I bought a bottle of Brasso but have not yet used it.
So far my Skip DR has fixed every scratch I threw at it.
NOTE 3: Once you get the data disc repaired and READABLE again;
back up your data.
Or CLONE the disc and set the original disc aside.
(Scratch repair is LESS effective the 2nd, 3rd, etc, times around).
NOTE 4: if it is a data disc and buffing fails,
you can also try data recovery utilities such as:
a. CD roller
b. ISO buster
The only negative I had was the the unit I bought did NOT include the AC adapter.
Luckily I use rechargable AA batteries for most electronic appliances/devices.
