Good drive, but DVD write not working after one and half years. [Posted on 2007-06-06] It's a good drive. I have used it to burn a lot of CD and DVDs. But after only one and half year, it suddenly died on writing DVD. Everytime I tried to write DVD, it gives me the information "Power calibration error". I haven't found a solution yet. However, CD writing is good. So it is not totally dead.
Short life [Posted on 2007-09-04] My previous Sony DVD drive lasted only 6 months with very light use. Sony replaced it with a DRU-800A under warranty, and the DRU-800A was much better - it lasted all of 9 months. Good thing I saved my 2001 Creative CD drive on the shelf. If you insist on buying a Sony drive, make sure that you buy a spare - you'll need it.
broke after 2.5 years [Posted on 2008-03-13] Worked wonders for me for 2.5 years, was fast, reliable, and didn't have a single complaint about it. I'd rate myself as a moderate user for my drive, Ive used it to burn probably about 300 data dvd's. But it now has issues. It finishes burning, and then theres missing files and corrupted files on the cd after the burn that were not that way to begin with. And it has issues playing things now. Its like after 2.5 years with only moderate use for mostly just burning files, it went lazy on me.
Still working [Posted on 2008-08-06] I've had it about 3 years now, use it on average of 3 times a day for burning DVD's. I'm a photographer so I take a lot of movies with my Canon S3is. I put them all on DVD to play on the standard home DVD player. I found that it does make a difference as to the brand of DVD I use. I found that Taiyo Yuden Premium Line is the least expensive and yet work 99.9999999% of the time.. period. In thousands of use, I've only had 5 coasters. Easy set up, easy use. This is my second Sony and BOTH are STILL working years later. I'll buy another when these expire.
