Customer Reviews:

Pretty and affordable [Posted on 2007-11-27]
I've had this laptop for close to three months, and so far i'm still loving it and have had no problem with it

a couple things:

- it's aesthetically pleasing, light and fast.

- the screen can't be viewed from certain angles, so if for example you're watching a video from your bed you will have to adjust the screen.

- The transition from XP to Vista was frustrating at first but i've come to love Vista.

- sony doesn't ship this laptop with a recovery disc or a hard copy of the user guide (they're all in the laptop). to create a recovery disc, you will need 2 DVDs or 1 DVD-DL. it will come handy in case the hard drive decides to die on you

- if you can, go for the 2GB ram. I ordered this laptop from [...] and opted for 1GB which is a little lacking at times. speaking of which, i also recommend ordering straight from sonystyle.com since you can customize it to your needs and may come out with cheaper price. i spent $[...] on mine after tax and shipping.

- the pulsing LED light is pretty but can be annoying. good thing you have the option to turn it off. here's how, copy pasted from my VGN-CR290 manual:

"Changing the default illumination lamp activity
The illumination lamp on the bottom of your computer illuminates depending on your actions or the computer's status. You can change this default activity of the lamp to make it stay unlit by following these steps:

1. Click Start, All Programs, and VAIO Control Center.
The VAIO Control Center window appears.
2. Click Illumination LED Setting in Others.
3. Click to cancel the Enable the Illumination LED check box.
4. Click OK."

- I got the laptop in Dove (white). it looks and feels very much like a mac book with a better paint job (shimmery white instead of plastic white)

Good computer, a few glitches [Posted on 2007-11-29]
Firstly I want to say that I had to drive over an hour away to purchase this laptop in September, only to bring it home and find out the screen was broken. Customer service was poor directing me to turn the computer on and off a number of times and habitually asking me if I had turned the display off! They then asked me to return it to the store which I flat out refused to do, and eventually mailed me a box to ship it to Sony. They only had it about 5 days, so that was actually the only perk to it!

Since then it has overall been a fine computer aside from a few quirks: The AV Mode doesn't work completely depending on what is being played and the cd/dvd drive runs loudly.

Battery life is not nearly what it is advertised as unless you only use word.

If you can get XP because Vista runs slow, all of the safety features are obnoxious, and there is still limited software that is compatible. There is an option to save documents in office as 97/2003 versions which is the saving grace of this platform.

Delete all the garbage sample software programs off the computer and do yourself a favor! They waste energy and time as they pop up constantly trying to get you to buy them.

Lastly, the speakers on the laptop itself are crap. I'm embarassed for Sony! I have my own speakers but sometimes I just want to hear something from the notebook and it sounds tinny.

Otherwise, this computer seems solid. Runs fine, do not have any issue as far as start up, running applications, or programs that are installed. I recommend it for anyone needing a sleek machine to do work-- but I recommend a mac for anyone who wants advanced video/gaming/graphics.

STAY AWAY FROM VAIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [Posted on 2007-12-30]
Please be aware that there is a known defect in the Vaio line. I personally have had direct experience with this having my Vaio die on me as a result of a "cracked motherboard" only 14 months of having it. It is a known defect in the Vaio design. I urge anyone who reads this to be very catious about buying a Vaio and consider an alternative, more reliable computer.

"The issue stems from the memory SODIMM slots. The solder joints that connect the SODIMM's to the motherboard are breaking, causing one or both memory modules not to be polled, or counted, towards total system memory...Sony than charges $700-$1200 to repair it"

Great ! [Posted on 2008-01-31]
This Vaio has treated me well. Great machine. U will not be disapointed if you buy.

sony garb  [Posted on 2008-02-24]
Well I knew sony wasnt that good in computers when I bought this thing. But I bought it anyway. HP and TOSHIBAs were far superior, the battery on the sony doesnt fit tightly in the computer, it shakes around, somtimes the latch comes loose and you can really lose your battery. The keyboard is nice and the camera is good. It is pretty slow for windows vista, you might look for somthing with more speed for vista, this doesnt cut the mustard. THis will be my second and last sony, the last one had disk failure twice and then I was told they would extend the warrenty which they never did, once this one goes south it goes in the trash. The machine looks cool in the pictures but isnt that great in person. The hp dv2000's are mrore substantial and you can hear the speaker. The cr has the worst speakers i have seen in a long time, sort of the speed of the macbook....
