Great little work horse [Posted on 2008-03-14] I think buying computers is a difficult decision and with the choices we have its even harder, so when I decided to replace my Acer I made a list of things I had to have and what I could live without. I found that I could live without Bluetooth as I had it on my Acer and never used it.
As all the features are already listed the only thing left is to give my concerns and opinions. The speakers are not that great when watching a movie or listening to songs. Using headphones helps but I think Sony could have done a better job with the speakers. The headphone sockets to the side are much better when you have the laptop on your lap as my old Acer (and others also do this) had it in the front and the wires would always bend and eventually the headphones would stop working as the wire inside the cable would break. Also having the DVD/CD controls on the front is easy and the display off button is great to extend battery life when listening to songs, as you don't need to have the display on. I also purchased Business vista and its so much better and faster then the home edition. I use the laptop to store my photos, watch movies, listen to songs and programming. Overall the laptop is light-weight, fast, and screen is fantastic. For my use as I need to carry a laptop with me, this is a great buy.
Great for hwat is has and a good price for a Sony [Posted on 2008-04-16] I didn't buy it online I went to a Best Buy before Christmas and paid under $1000 for a new one and it was a gift of which I have used allot thus why I am providing this review.
I see varying reviews on the pre configd computer that was/is sold at many chain stores and online last year and into earlier this year as new models of these are out that are faster and cheaper. This machine for what it has works great and at a decent price for Sony as they are like Dell, usually more costly for similar products by HP and others. Go test drive one at a Best Buy or other electronics chains and or even buy one and just make sure you know the return policy in case you don't like and want to return it. I like the colors too, not important at all but a nice option if you want some specific color.
Bloatware [Posted on 2008-05-04] Contains unnecessary software, or bloatware, that slows up startup and consumes memory. "Spy Sweeper" is the most annoying.
Worst Computer Ever. [Posted on 2008-05-06] I have owned this computer for less than 6 months and in the past 6 months three things have broken. First the left click broke, I sent the computer into Sony and they replaced it. A few months later my computer turned off and would not power on. I sent the computer to Sony and they replaced my motherboard. A week after receiving the computer back my screen started to malfunction. There was a dotted line that would appear and blink then go away for a few seconds only to return again. I called up Sony support and as I was on the phone with them my screen began to fade completely to white then flash back to normal than fade to white again. Now I have sent it back to them again for another repair. Two major repairs in less than 6 months is ridiculous.
How did this get 4/5 stars???? [Posted on 2008-06-21] PROS: Size, light weight, fast (if you install a new operating system)
CONS: Battery doesn't last more than an hour if you're using the computer for anything other than typing a paper. Not sure what the light is for... Comes with Vista. Keyboard is hard to use. My thumbs hit the touchpad while typing and it causes the cursor to jump. VERY annoying. XP drivers are incomplete and no support for Vista 64bit or XP 64bit. Speakers are crap.
THOUGHTS: I've had this laptop for 6months now. I started to get the blue screen of death with Vista every time the computer would come of hibernation. This prompted me to install XP. I now have no sound and none of my keyboard function keys work.
It has a great feel when you're at the store trying to size it up against other laptops, but when it comes to getting work done and using it daily, it doesn't cut it.
