Vista Only and Adware, Adware, Adware [Posted on 2008-01-30] When a relative asks for assistance 1 days after purchasing a laptop, it normally is a hardware related problem. In this case, it is just Windows Vista. I have yet to see a "tier 1" provider such as Sony load a laptop with more junk than this one.
After the first reboot, 2 programs error out with "attempting to identify problem" windows. IE has the AOL toolbar along with other cruft. A simple connection to a wireless access point took over an hour to resolve (DHCP wasn't working until the network type was set to private instead of public).
Even with all of this I could recommend the product to my family. But when I called Sony, I was told there are *no* XP drivers for this system. None. Nada.
Until SP1 comes out, I won't go back to the Vista trough. I also will not buy a laptop that does not support Windows XP.
Good Laptop With Lots of Unnecessary Software [Posted on 2008-05-20] The laptop works fine with 2 GB of memory, which is included with the laptop. I do not notice my laptop as being slow except when using one particular industry software that is not typically used by many people. The screen is gorgeous. I think the screen is even better than an Apple laptop. I like the fact that one can play a DVD without turning on the PC. The monitor does not latch down like many other laptops, which is different. The laptop is light considering that it has a 15.4" wide screen. If using Vista, I suggest tweaking the graphics if one has problems with the operating system being slow. One major disappointment is that the laptop has lots of trial software, which has to be deleted or it would be taking up unnecessary hard drive space. I don't use some of Sony's software such as the VAIO Video and Photo Suite and VAIO Camera Capture Utility. Altogether, the laptop is very nice.
