A failure in Sony design standards and warranty support [Posted on 2007-04-30] As noted in other reviews, this product is not designed or built to the usually high Sony standards. The LCD screen WILL break under normal use and Sony will not honor the warranty if the screen fails. My screen failed after six months and I returned the computer to Sony for repairs. Sony charged me over $700 and refused to return the 'physically damaged screen' as I requested so that the 'intentional damage' that I 'caused' could be verified. To confirm that this is a design flaw Sony included with the repaired computer NEW instructions as to how to prevent damaging the screen noting that 'the LCD screen may be sensitive to pressure or added stress'. This product is a sad commentary on Sony's design standards and on its unwillingness to stand behind its warranty.
My Sweet Tiny New Laptop [Posted on 2007-08-04] Smaller than my average textbook, this little sweetheart is a beaut. Without the battery, the laptop is light as a feather, and the screen is crystal clear. I have been working on it (unplugged) since about 7 this morning, (it is 2:30pm now) and the battery is still going! The other reviews on here talk about the scads of junk pre-installed. They are more than right, but when you get rid of that, I don't notice any difference in speed between this laptop and my old one, which had a 1.8 Ghz. As to the screen "crackling", I haven't seen any of this but it would be possible. This is a small and fragile laptop (what did you expect for less than 3lbs???), but with proper treatment should hold up.
Fantastic! [Posted on 2007-08-31] I was a little concerned with the size until it arrived! The sreen clarity is brilliant, it's so light and compact is literally fits in my purse. It's fast, the keyboard is full size and the location of some of the control buttons are on the top of the computer rather then in the front or on the sides so it makes the DVD/CD drive easier to access.
If there was any downside it would be that the computer comes over loaded with unnecessary programs that need to be removed.
I recommend getting the sony carry case that fit's it to a tee.
Paid for 2nd day shipping, box arrived a week later and left on door step [Posted on 2007-09-01] The product arrived almost a week late although I paid for 2nd day shipping. The box with the laptop had large lettering on the outside indicating that computer equiptment was inside and the box was left in the open on my front porch. Laptop could have been stolen.
A neighbor saw the package and held it for me.
I tried to track the package and found this very difficult. The vendor's customer service department said that if I had ordered directly from them the shipping would have been faster.
A nerve wracking purchase not knowing when the laptop would arrive although I paid for 2nd day delivery and the package arrived almost a week later.
Don't think I'll buy an important/expensive item through Amazon again.
The laptop is working fine so far but it could have been stolen off of my door step.
PS Sony ships laptops next day and require a signature.
Good Sony experience - recommended [Posted on 2007-12-26] This is my second Sony 11.1" screen laptop - I replaced my old TX650 that had been rained on, dropped, kicked, and generally abused for almost 2 years when the HD started getting flaky and the 60gig capacity was full.
The old TX650 stood up well.
I think that the reason that it lasted so long in such an abusive environment - was it's sub 3 lb weight and strong, carbon fiber based case. I think one factor is that it's so light, that it "hurts itself" less when set down "less than elegantly".
I've dealt with Sony's service dept. for a few years and they've always been realistically prompt, attentive and have delivered on what they've promised in the time frame that they estimated.
For reference, I'm in the the service industry and they've always treated my problems in an objectively decent attitude.
I've bought "way too many" laptops of different brands for employees over the years and eliminated many brands for their general driver quirkiness, weirdness and proprietary goofiness - stuff than made it a requirement to contact Tech Support. FWIW, 99% of the time, the Tech Support depts were "generally" good ans well meaning (oh, there was one exception... :-).
So.... I bought a TXN15P with an 80gig HD and DVD burner, refurbished. Imaged my old TX650 HD onto the new 80gig. Sorted out a few driver wrinkles at the hotel one night and it's been great ever since.
Oh - Boot Speed?
I bought the TXN with XP Pro - and NOT with VISTA.
Boots up, well, about like XP Pro boots up. About 5 times quicker than Vista........ but not as quick as Win 3.1.
Vista, even at best, is slow booting.
I read around about Vista problems and bloatiness before I bought and also had already listened to my next door neighbor for 3-4 weeks who "just had to have dual core Vista "power" in his new desktop computer.
After he send his computer back, twice to Dell, with hardware and Vista / hardware clashes. They did what they could do and eventually fixed all - but Vista / hardware clashes seemed a big part of it (oh, and that one time when the smoke came out of the case, was the other issue - but they were good about fixing it).
Back to XP - XP Boots up even quicker after I started deleting the uneeded HP printer and scanner talkback communications programs and installed ONLY the HP printer drivers.
As far as Sony as a company? I'm sure that they have their problems, but, after buying IBM, HP, Compaq and Dell - well..... Sony has done a good job for us. Now, if they'd just lower their prices.....
AND - I still have my TX650 that's waiting for that 100gig HD I bought and haven't installed, yet.
