Its OK [Posted on 2008-07-11] The PC is extremely light-weight and cosmetically beautiful even though mine had a tiny scratch on the screen when it arrived. Performance wise I would say it is ok. Most operations perform at lighting speed but has some trouble playing DVDs smoothly when set to full screen. I would say I was expecting more for the price but it's good for frequent travelers.
Powerful Mobile Workhorse [Posted on 2008-07-31] This is the ideal ultraportable with full range features and strong performance. The TZ is my third Sony ultraportable spanning 6 years (TR, TX, and now TZ) and by far the best that Sony has produced to date. After a deplorable experience with my TX series machine that was an absolute lemon, I researched my options and concluded that the only complete ultraportable on the market that had all I wanted was to go back to Sony.
Due to concerns about performance under the Vista OS, I made sure to get the 7700 processor (best one offered) and 2 GB RAM with the largest HDD offered. The machine runs Office 2007 with ease and performs very well for my use as a consultant. The keyboard is quite comfortable but keep in mind I am a long time user of smaller keyboards. Touch pad and fingerprint sensor are good size and placed smartly. The screen is as crisp as any notebook I have seen. Despite feeling a bit too thin when opening the laptop, it has held up well so far with a bit of extra care. Battery life is phenomenal -- I can go nearly all day on mid-range brightness and closing the lid when I am not using it.
The WWAN via Sprint works perfectly as does the standard 802.11 wireless. Be advised that Sony and Sprint have made use of wireless much harder than needed as you cannot have WWAN and 802.11 sessions active at the same time. So, you cannot use the Sprint WWAN for internet and a wireless network to connect to peripherals (print, scan, mass storage). I am sure there is a way around this though have not had time to study it.
Finally, I love Amazon and nearly always find the best prices here, but they missed the boat on these machines. Sony offers a custom built version of this machine for $300 less and it is an even bigger savings on the flash memory machines. If only someone at Amazon paid attention and adjusted pricing, they might have got my business too.
Less than 2 months old and computer will not boot. Contacted Sony and they recommend system restore followed by depot service shipment. Looking at error message (blue scren on boot) I try to replace memory. Viola - it fixes the issue with a 1GB SODIMM. Call Sony again and am assured I will have replacement 2GB next day. Five days later and no memory and no indication from Sony if it will ever show up. Never seen a company do the right thing anf botch upexecution more. Bought a 2GB SODIMM off Amazon for $40 to save having to deal with Sony incompetence. Better products than support!
GREAT FOR TRAVEL-This is my 3rd Sony 11.1" laptop! Faster, bigger hard drive, attractive case! [Posted on 2008-08-17] I take a lot of digital pictures and it is great to slip in the SD card, unload them into the computer, edit them and have a lot of the work done before I get home to make a DVD using the Ken Burns effect.
Perfect companion for mobile users [Posted on 2008-08-24] Although I'm a (IBM and/or Lenovo) Thinkpad fan, and I have a Apple 20" iMac at home, This is my second Sony laptop (the other was a SZ)
After evaluating 3 options (Sony Vaio TZ, Apple MacBook Air and Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad X61), I consider the Vaio TZ option as the winner. My reasons are:
1) This is really light weight
2) The 11.1" (wide)screen 1366 x 768 is perfect for work and entertainment
3) In THE SAME UNIT (with no additional accesories) you get: 2 USB ports, SD memory card reader, Memory Stick reader, DVD+RW, VGA Port, Webcam, Fingerprint reader, RJ11 network adapter and RJ45 modem/fax port.
4) It have an excellent battery life, and a small size AC adapter/charger.
For my kind of work, I should move between insecure places and streets, plenty of people, where isn't good idea to be walking with "Laptop" case that can be easily identified by potential thieves. I prefer to be unnoticed. I trasport the laptop and charger in a handy leather folder with zipper, and it seems simply as I were carrying papers or similar stuffs.
I have a full month of use and I think this is really the best choice for mobile users that want to travel light but powerful.
Beware NOT Vista Business [Posted on 2008-08-25] Just a heads up. Despite the description this laptop does not come with Vista Business. The first unit I had shipped overnight for a business trip. It came two days later with Vista Home. After explaining to Amazon that it came with Vista Home they agreed to send a replacement. Surprisingly the second one came with home edition as well even after they knew there was a problem with the first shipment. If the home edition is acceptable then this is a very nice laptop.
