sparta [Posted on 2004-05-22] the game seems to be great because it's a strategic game in turns, a lot of options, and you can be like a hero conquering the ancient world.
BEST AI I've EVER PLAYED AGAINST, game is great too ;) [Posted on 2004-06-21] This is one of the better games from Slitherine. While it takes some getting used to the fact you don't get individual control over your units in the tactical battles, the command orders and instructions part before the battles are actually more realistic. The campaign map is beautiful to behold. The UI (user interface) is simple and easy to get used to. If you like Greeks and Spartans and Persians and always wanted to play something that reminded you of the movie 300 Spartans, this is the game for you. This game has one of the best and "hardest" AI's, you will encounter in a computer strategy game up to the present, on the harder difficulties of play just surviving takes talent and real grey matter. Don't expect to push over this AI, it will overwhelm you in a heartbeat. To me this game is like taking a part of the Civilization series of games and slowing time down and actually playing out an era of time, an Ancients time. And if you like Ancients, I believe you will like/love SPARTAN. I'm pretty critical of most games these days, so if you see me give a good review of a game, especially the strategic and tactical value of it and that the AI performs better than any other, you can put that in your pipe and smoke it. ;)
Great Game [Posted on 2004-09-22] I wasn't so keen on the previous games of Slitherine before (Legion & Chariots of war) as they seemed to simplistic to me (Diplomacy, battles..). I tried the demo of Spartan after reading many good reviews and the same evening it made my order for Spartan & Gates of Troy (the add-on). I am currently playing the game all the time. The game is a lot deeper than the previous ones. It has a great AI and a lot of nice features (Trade, diplomacy, buildings). You may compare this to a CIV game limited to Greece in the antics. Some major differences:
1. You cannot create new cities (but can improve them).
2. Battles are more realistic (no more luck as in CIV3)
3. You may still win the game if you don't control a specific resource as you can trade for it.
I recommend trying the demo if like Greeks and the "good old times"
Poor graphics made a good game average. [Posted on 2006-01-30] Wonderful set-up and game play but why give so much attention to the campaign game, types of units and battle modifiers and forget about the graphics engine.
