The only thing wrong with this game is that you just cant stop playing! [Posted on 2006-03-27] I bought this game several months ago after playing and beating KotOR II (about 7 times actually). I was not sure what to expect, as i was so infatuated with Knights of the old republic 2 that i was sure that the first one definitely wouldnt live up. My friends, it does. Of course there are some things you should consider before buying, such as:
The fact that you start out as a non-jedi character. I personally enjoyed running around for 5 hours with a blaster and my awesome suit of armor (i actually beat the game with only a blaster once) but i know that some people that ive talked to found the lack of force powers and overall pwnge over the average thug annoying.
There is a LOT of running and running and running and getting lost and doing more running. A lot of the quests involve running back and forth across the planet to find the other guy you need to talk to to advance the plot. This was ok by me the first time i played, but after the second time it began to be really annoying
There is also the occasional glitch that happens to either screw up your computer or mess with your save file. So far, I have downloaded the patches and that got rid of most of it but i have a friend who was 90% of the way through the game (about 20-25 hours or so) and his save file was glitched so bad that after a cutscene his entire computer would freeze.
Finally, the thing that bugged me a lot was the fact that being able to advance your relationship with your friends and find out more about them was entirely based on your level and experience, not on your influence like in the second game. I was able to cheat and advance my level so that i could figure out that final part of Bastila's past, but by the time you get to the final planet/level you cant talk with your characters and you are stuck with what you have.
Other than that, this was a very challenging game with a lot of flaire and artistry to it (including your relationship with your NPC companions, even romance). I would definitely reccomend this game to anyone who loves to play for a some-odd 30 hours to beat an exciting and crazy game that is sure to capture the hearts of anyone who really is interested.
The best Starwars game yet [Posted on 2006-03-30] Star Wars KOTOR takes place 4,000 years before the reign of the empire and 4 years after the Manderlonian wars. This game is so awesome I mean I can't wait to play it when I get home from school every day. It has one bad thing about it its that you can't stop playing. From Taris to Coruscaunt to tattoine this game will grab you and won't let go. I have only had this game for about a month or two but I know that this game is by far the best Star Wars game ever. ALL HAIL THE DARK SIDE!!!!!!!!!!1
It Feels Oh So Good..... To Be Bad. [Posted on 2006-05-02] I know I'm a little late with this review, but like me, I'm sure a lot of you are looking at this game because of all the great things you have heard and on top of that the great price! Taking into account the price and value of this game I can't really recommend against getting it.... Part of me wants to.... But I can't.
Some will say that the strongest point of this game is the story. And I will agree that the writers did a fantastic job on developing an adventure filled with epic intrigue, betrayal, and even a little bit of romance. However, I ended with the feeling that the story would have been an excellent fit for a movie and only a good fit for a game. I say that because some plot points felt forced and I often found myself not in the least bit interested in the story behind certain quests and the ramblings of the people in my group (unless it was the gorgeous Bastilla of course!). I guess it didn't take long for my character to turn to the Dark Side as I was forced to tell most of the people to shut up and handle their own problems. Granted that was fun in itself and definitely a great feature of the game, but it would have been nice to care one way or the other.
I guess that brings me to the biggest feature of the game. "Choose Your Path". Yes, you can choose to be good or evil. Yes, there are Dark and Light Side powers. Yes, there are different endings. And yes, it affects everything about the game and is obviously the feature it was designed around. This is basically done through dialogue choices where it is pretty obvious what the "good" answer is. There are a few memorable conversations but for the most part I was just clicking the evil answer as quick as I could so I could Force Choke some more innocent people.
This raises an interesting point. Would I still recommend this game if you could not choose the Dark Side? Without much hesitation I would have to say "No". We have all played the good guy games. That has been done before and this game would not have been a stand out in that category. The inventory management system is very poor. "Gear" or equipable items, which are normally one of the best parts of an RPG seems like an after thought, and the movement system is a little bit awkward. I often cursed that my Death Field would not work on my own party as they were blocking me into a corner.
Now let me inform you of a little secret that you can choose to use or not. If you have ever dreamt of being a Jedi God and an absolutely unstoppable force in the galaxy all you need to do is only take 4 or 5 levels of your original class before you become a Jedi. This allows you to "save" levels and take them in one of the powerful Jedi classes. It might be a little more challenging to make it to Dantooine and become a Jedi, but once you do you will be unstoppable. And I do mean you will be utterly invincible. Enemies won't even be able to touch you as you throw them all over the screen with Force Waves and then finish them off with Shock. Even the final boss will be nothing but a mere annoyance. And this is at normal difficulty. A bit of an exploit I'll admit, but it is so much fun.
So if somewhere inside you there is a little Darth Vader waiting to come out then this is the game for you. It will let you give in to every Dark urge you have and then some.
If you are just looking for a great all around RPG I would recommend looking elsewhere.
Will you stay on the light? Or stumble to the dark? [Posted on 2006-05-02] KOTOR is simply one of the best rpg's ever made.
When you first start KOTOR, you are given the choice whether to simply skip the part about designing your character or go through with it.[I always choose to fully design my character] When you're done, you start the game in a republic ship called the Endar Spire, and it's under attack by the Sith! You team up with your bunk mate Trask Ulgo, get your equipment, and flee to the escape pods.[By the way, Trask is killed on the ship so don't expect to see him again] Then you get into the last escape pod with a republican war hero named Carth Onasi, and crash land on a planet called Taris. From there you team up with more characters who aid you in your quest. Like Bastila, Mission Vao, Zallbar, and more.
Throughout the game, you will be forced to make decisions that nudge you towards the light or dark side. For example, on Taris, you will meet a man being mugged by two bounty hunters because the man owes some money to the crime lord Davik, whom you later meet. Now, if you're a good guy, you must kill the bounty hunters, give the man the money he owes and save the day! But if you plan to someday become the Sith lord and rule the galaxy, all you need to do is kill the bounty hunters, and mug the man yourself.
And the story line is great! You have to find these maps on different worlds to find a Sith tool called the Star Forge, if you're evil, you take it and its power for yourself. And if you're good, you destroy it. Also, your secret identity is a surprise. I was freaked out when I found out who I was. Another neat part about the game is that, unlike most rpgs, you can talk to your companions to find out more about their history. Which in turn can provide interesting subquests.
And there's a wide variety of weapons. Some of which you will recognize from the films, such as blasters and lightsabers. And then of course there's the force itself. If you're good, you get to use defensive force powers such as heal and force shield. And if you're evil, you get to use offensive force powers such as force lighting and choke.
All in all, if you're a rpg fan, a star wars fan, or if you just want an incredibly good game, don't hesitate in buying this game. LONG LIVE KOTOR!
Cons?; up to you ! [Posted on 2006-05-12] I agree with the PRO's stated above.
This game has the feel of: "being part of a good movie".
The UI(... user interface) is the best I've seen.
The combination of RPG/RTS/Turn Based, when coupled with the que/pause to form an attack; brilliant.
So, why the lower rating.
Simply put: "the ending(s)were simplistic/weak and not as thorough as I would have liked".
Consider all the dialogue options; the character relationship possibilities ... some dialogue/characters just seemed to "dry up" ... then you get to the end and, well, I don't want to spoil it for first time players
I expected "much more" of a overall ending scenario based on "my decisions + dialogue options".
The romantic relationship(s) ... well, they go nowhere
I only was able to get involved with one character ... I played male
Yet, both thought I was "the best thing since sliced bread" ?
I basically used the same trio, unless the game required otherwise.
Now, I played it 6 times ... 2-Light; 2-Dark; 2 just going solo(... one each way).
Found it more enjoyable to just forgo the dialogue/ character relationship options.
I simply pumped up my skills with cheats which were equivalent to what my party member would have had.
This way, I had no "ending letdown".
Now, if you don't really care about character followthrough, as it relates to your decisions/dialogue choices and what/how the ending would look like, then it's a 5 star game.
I wanted an ending to match the time I took in developing "my story/decisions/choices"; sadly, I felt cheated.
