This card does not work on many Dell notebooks. I tried a Dell Inspiron 9300 and 1100. If you dig deep enough on startech.com there is an incompatibility list but you won't find it until you have spent several hours trying to get this P*S to work.
100% Serial Port Compatibility [Posted on 2008-04-23]
Our company still uses serial ports to connect to much of the equipment we have sold and still support and the USB to Serial adapters simply do not work for most serial communication. We needed a 100% compatible serial port on our new notebooks since you cannot find serial ports on computers any more. I found everything we needed with this card.
I admit that I have never tried this card in a Dell, like the previous reviewer, but I have tried it on IBM, HP/Compaq and Toshiba notebooks with absolutely no problems. We currently have 10 users with these adapters and they work flawlessly. You do, however, have to go to the settings of each serial port in the Device Manager after it is installed and click the "Detect Frequency" button then save the changes before it works 100%.
