Customer Reviews:

Very powerful & cool [Posted on 2007-11-13]
This beast got me through 4 college algebra classes, 2 statistics classes, 3 science classes, and 3 accounting/finance classes. It saved my a** on more than one test. If I can find anything to complain about, it is that it does so much that it gets hard to remember how to use all the features, and I'm too lazy to pick up the instruction manual (which is the size of a paperback book) and read it. I hesitated before dropping $90 on a new one, but I'm glad I did. It's great for graphing, plotting, and will easily handle complex equations. This may be an older model, but it's still very common in classrooms everywhere, which means a lot of the professors are familiar with it and will help students properly use it. My professors did just that. As for claims that it breaks, mine has taken countless headers off the edge of my desk in classrooms onto hard tile floors, and guess what, it still works perfectly, not a scratch. Bottom line, this has more than fulfilled all my needs, and I doubt I have used more than 50% of all the available features this thing is capable of. You really can't go wrong with this.

Solid Calculator [Posted on 2007-12-09]
I love my TI-86. I got my first one over 3 years ago for AP Calculus, and when the screen for that one was destroyed (stepped on, I believe), I didn't hesitate to buy the same model second hand. It has good calculus abilities, and excellent graphing features. The conversions are handy, and good to familiarize yourself with. I've dropped this calculator several times from desk height (3 feet) with no problems- it is sturdy.

I would recommend this calculator for any math student, physics student, or engineer.

Excellent calculator [Posted on 2007-12-11]
This calculator can do anything you will need for Calc I. It might even be able to do your laundry, but I'm not much of a programmer.

Reliable, Durable, Great for Most Applications [Posted on 2008-05-31]
I have been using my TI-86 for 8 years now and it has never had any kind of problems.

I have left this calculator out in my car during the freezing Michigan Winters for weeks on end as well as the 100 degree Summers for the same amount of time. Never a single problem with the calculator.

The calculator has done almost everything I have needed of it all the way through Calculus and Linear Algebra. With that said, the TI-89 and others have much more utility for the high end courses, and are not hugely more expensive.

If you are going to be in a lot of college courses that have high end mathematics, then I would go for the TI-89 or other higher end calculator. If you aren't then it might be worth saving a little money on this incredibly durable calculator that will likely do everything you need it to.

Sixteen Years & Going Strong [Posted on 2008-08-05]
I bought mine in October of 1992 as electrical engineering student. In 16 years, it has never left my side. It is intuitive to use, intelligently designed, has lots of handy features built in and is as tough as a VW Beetle. I've dropped mine (and sat on it) more times than I can remember and it has suffered no problems whatsoever.

I recently added up how much money I have earned (so far) with this calculator, and the TI-86 is easily the single most cost-effective purchase I have ever made in my life.

I've hoped for an upgraded version, such as more memory or a colored screen, but honestly there is no compelling reason to upgrade. If I ever need more, I'd probably start with a pocket PC and go from there.

After sixteen years of great service, I'd only buy another TI-86.

"Have calculator, will travel."
