One Statement MADE My Life [Posted on 2008-09-21]
I'll keep it simple. I took the advice 'Be a Front Seater' from this book, and went from being a sit-at-the-back, never-volunteer guy to becoming a person consulted by government on legislation affecting private investigators; writing two books; getting the job I always wanted; and many other things.

If that one piece of advice can have such impact, imagine the effect of the rest! BUY IT - and live a new life by taking action on the content.

Sells you on your own BIGness... [Posted on 2008-10-14]
It is commonly said in the world of persuasion that
"Facts tell, stories sell". Many personal development
books follow this axiom. The authors of these
books appear to be following a familiar model
in order to sell us, the readers, on their ideas.

What do third-party stories do? what is their
purpose? Is it that we derive a sense of social
proof or veracity from a story told about somebody
else by a narrator who may or may not be reliable?

"The Magic of Thinking Big" follows a model similar to
"How To Win Friends and Influence People" -
brief illustrative stories which are held up as
proof for the author's theories about what makes
people successful with other people.

At the end of each chapter of this book there is
a brief recap of the lessons in the chapter. This
is a useful feature because you can read the
lessons the stories illustrate quickly this way.

It's quite a good book. It was written in 1959 and
the formula wasn't new then and it's certainly
been immitated hundreds of times since - and
writing a book of straightforward ideas about success
padded out with anecdotal stories seems to be a proven
model for establishing oneself as a personal development
guru or motivational speaker.

I haven't written a book about the topic yet but
if I do I'll be sure to immitate the formula
of this one - apparently it's a good way to sell
a lot of books or at least be perceived as
an authority.

Worth reading but more or less interchangible
with countless other titles. It's a classic because
a lot of people have read it. The strategies
aren't particularly out-of-date or hard to get
your mind around.

A useful book worth reading if you haven't read
many of these types of books or if you want to
read all the classic ones.

Abaracadabra-The Magic of Thinking Big [Posted on 2008-11-14]
What's it about? Changing your thinking patterns to get the things you want such as a higher income, financial security, or greater enjoyment in living.

What's the main idea? Success is determined not so much by the size of your brain as it is by the size of your thinking.

How does it accomplish this? In every chapter of the book, the reader will find many practical ideas, techniques, and principles that willl enable them to harness the power of thinking big. Every technique is illustrated by a case history. In this way, the reader will not only figure out what to do, but see exactly how to apply each principle to actual problems and situations.

Give me an example. In the chapter titled "How to Think Big", an example is used of a successful realtor to illustrate the principle "see what can be, not just what is." In this example, the realtor has a knack for selling rundown, unattractive property- not by selling it for what it is, but for what it COULD be.

Is the writing style boring or technical? Absolutely not. The writing style reminds me of Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends & Influence People. Also, the many examples make it an interesting read which holds your attention.

Who should get it? Everyone who wants to do better in life! So if you want to live "big" it all starts with thinking that way. Readers who like this book may also be interested in Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World. And remember, think BIG!
