The best of the great Thief series - but it needs a decent computer [Posted on 2007-02-21] I have only just started to play this great game as my old 1.2GHz PC with 4x [256Mb] AGP graphics card just couldn't handle the action (there aren't many in-game controls for reducing graphics requirements and the game always crashed even with the v1.1 patch applied). Now we have an Nvidia 7950 graphics card and AMD-2 5000 PC the game has finally come to life. Game play is as unique as before, you (the thief Garret) must creep around in the shadows, pick locks and pockets, stealing whatever comes your way unseen. You can knock out the odd guard etc. and drag him into the shadows (as if his body is found the alarm will sound). Everything you steal can be sold to a fence to buy more weapons or given to the secretive Keepers, guardians of the mystical Glyphs, to help prevent the Age of Darkness decending. So no gung-ho charge with a BFG here, you will be overpowered and in Pavelock Prison seconds later, if you are lucky. The totally convincing stealth aspect is unique to the thief series, and the recreation of a rather surreal medieval Europe (with gothic engines and electric lights) is engrossing. It's a world of dark magic, Holy scripts, and religious fervour. So `Beware the Tricksters flame for only the Builder's fire burns with righteousness' - The Hammerite book of lessons.
Most of the levels take place in the city this time (there is one trip to an underworld lost kingdom). However one level really stands out as exceptional - the trip to The Cradle - a now deserted orphanage and madhouse. The game-play in this level is genuinely haunting with an all-pervading air of sadness. There are some other great levels as well, e.g. on the zombie infested ship The Abysmal Gail and in the catacombs of Fort Ironwood. Throughout the game you can get the Hammerite and/or the Pagan factions onto your side by doing them favours and not stealing from them (that much). The picture quality of this game is far better than the two excellent predecessors - hence the graphics demands. You do get the odd glitch, but these are bypassed by saving and reloading. So a great game if your Windows XP PC can cope with it, and now going for a bargain price. The game play isn't too hard and you can save anytime for difficult sequences. Those with older PCs or on-board graphics should try the excellent predecessors Thief 2: The age of metal (pretty good) and Thief: The dark project (excellent). [...]
another great thief game [Posted on 2007-06-08] deadly shadows continues in the steps laid down by its predecessors. with some big shoes to fill in terms of gameplay and enjoyability this game turns out to be nearly as good as the previous two thief games. if you're a fan of the thief series this is a good buy, you will have some problems with certain aspects that have been dumbed-down so that it could be ported to the xbox but overall it's a good title. first time thieves will most likely enjoy this title as well.
above expctation [Posted on 2007-07-23] i've always wanted to buy this game ever since it was out, i finally bought it 3 yars later and i am well plased!
A grat improvement from the previous Thief games, you can wander through the streets, break into your neighbour's house, pickpocket pedestrians in the streets, overhear conversations and discover some loot's hiding place.
Great game.
Graphics are from 2004 but still very good.
Keeping In the Thief Tradition [Posted on 2008-02-16] The third game in the Thief series, "Deadly Shadows" has done a good job of keeping the traditions and gameplay style that made the earlier games so great. While there are some new features, much of the game has been kept the same as its predecessors.
The game once again follows Garret, the eponymous thief, as he goes about stealing from particularly rich and wealthy victims. The game takes place in a fantasy medieval world, so in addition to guards and thugs of a more mundane variety there are also zombies, ghosts, various types of golem, and magical items.
The game uses a first-person camera and focuses on stealth. The missions take place at night, so sticking to the shadows (hence the name of the game) and moving quietly are key. Guards will often stand near lanterns or hold torches, so approaching them from a spot where they can't see you is important. Garret has many tools that he can use on his mission, both magical and mundane. His melee weapons are the non-lethal blackjack and the dagger. His ranged weapons are much more diverse - apart from regular, deadly arrows, Garret can purchase water arrows (which extinguish lights), moss arrows (which can be used to soften otherwise loud surfaces), gas arrows (launches knockout gas), fire arrows (highly damaging, but also highly visible), and noisemaker arrows (make noise when they hit, and are used to distract guards). In addition to these, Garret also has many kinds of mines and grenades as well.
Like the other games, Garret has many missions with various objectives, usually involving sneaking somewhere and stealing something. However, the ability to move around the city itself - instead of going from mission to mission like in old games - has been added. It's also possible to earn favor with either the Hammerites (a technological-based religious order) or the Pagans (a nature-favoring group, representing chaos to the Hammerites' law).
The graphics are pretty good, especially in the field of lighting. With the brightness properly set (there is a test when you first play the game to ensure your lighting is right) the atmosphere is definitely set. Light flickers through bars and windows, and avoiding it is very important to the gameplay; thus, it is well rendered. The human forms are not quite as good, but to be fair it is dark most of the time. The sound is pretty good, but there isn't any music that I could notice (because, well, it's a stealth game).
As a whole, the game has done a good job of keeping the Thief franchise going. It's not particularly exceptional as its own game because it's continuing a tradition, but if you liked the other Thief games this one should not disappoint.
8/10.
Thief DS [Posted on 2008-06-20] Is ok but the story is kind of boring and I didn't like the ending. They should of kept it for the pc only like Thief 1&2.
