The Lenovo X61 tablet pc will fall victim to the glass ceiling of mass marketing. Only the sleek, fashionable or the best buys make it big. Neither, the aesthetically lackluster-bureaucratic ThinkPad is nevertheless the finest tablet for a reasonable price ($1,624).
The X61 is a luxury for the average consumer, an exciting, fresh exposure to touch screen and handwritten input. As the tablet is a slate and a laptop, those comfortable footing the bill will be pleased as it can always double as a standard notebook; typical tablet ineptitudes of poor handwriting recognition apply but the full size keyboard is a reassuring fallback.
For eyes already set on a tablet, this computer is, all around, superior:
The striking, conveniently outdoors compatible, automatic rotating silky screen (screen orientation automatically goes from landscape to portrait), makes inking truly natural. Fast and smooth, higher end models are `loaded with a 7200rpm hard drive, 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, and 2GB of RAM' at amazingly irrelevant expense to the weight-load.
Ruggedly a creature comfort and conveniently built ultraportable, it is conducive for comfortable use almost anywhere. Note though, cradling this baby in your arms is not an option as you use it; reasonable 8-cell battery life (4 hours) is a must, so add-on an extra $130 and that in gold ingots to carry around. Also, plan on an additional $100 expense for an external CD/DVD drive as the X61 has none built in and Lenovo solutions are obscenely expensive.
Given its comfort, savvy students, this can be a notebook with omnipotence. Indulge in software like OneNote 2007 and make a surprisingly useful multi-sensory database of all your notes. As you take handwritten notes, simultaneous recording of the lecture allows you to later hear what was said exactly when you wrote a specific word.
The business user is the one Lenovo is primarily catering to. Given myriad tailored software, portability, high quality, and skintight security with fingerprint reader, this tablet will be toted alongside many suits alike--and have no problem blending in.
But don't be fooled industry folk and students alike, rip off that interchangeable facade, open up, press buttons and scream with the x61: `I'm sexy and smart where it matters.'
