Ok but not great [Posted on 2008-05-17] I bought this to replace my Thinkpad that died. I use it for school & it does work well but overall I only give it an ok.
Pros: nice size; can't beat the battery life; screen is great quality - pictures are beautiful; great speed & performs well even with multiple applications running
Cons: cheap keyboard - feels flimsy & it is almost impossible to type quietly; very loud fan in the side heat vent - it often sounds like a plane is taking off! very annoying in the library or during lecture; difficult to get the bluetooth to work - it actually came with instructions on how to reload the software to get it to supposedly work (I've had it 6 months & I still can't sync to my blackberry); randomly starts beeping
Like I said, it does what I need it to but I wouldn't purchase again. I chose this one over the HP because of the battery life but in the long run I'm not sure an extra hour was worth it. Overall it just seems to be a "cheap" computer. My good friend purchased an comparable HP at the same time & has absolutely no complaints.
Overall, a very good laptop [Posted on 2008-06-11] This is my first, and only laptop I've had so far it's worked well for me. It's pretty much given me freedom and has kept me up to date with today's stuff. Now I'm not gonna write a novel about it, but let me tell you my pros and cons of it:
PROS:
-Windows Vista, very up-to-date and very well put together
-Amazing and beautiful graphics, movies look amazing when played
-Verry nice looking and glossy screen, and not glossy to the point where you can see the person behind you being reflected in the screen
-Has a webcam and microphone
-Has a DVD burner
-Ripping DVDs and CDs are very quick
CONS:
-VERY LOUD FAN at the side. Like one person said, at times it sounds like an airplane taking off. Very distracting in the classroom or at the library.
-Windows Media Player doesn't work sometimes (at least not when playing videos)
-The Webcam. "But you just praised the webcam!" I know, don't get me wrong, I think it's good that there is one, however, it's very low quality video, and constantly lags. I've used it on MSN and people have told me it's very low quality, which I agree. It blacks out in dark areas, which is really annoying. The microphone works like a charm though.
So overall, if this is your first laptop, then it's really worth it. Just be aware of the flaws, though.
Poor quality [Posted on 2008-10-21] I've bought two Satellite laptops, and both have had their batteries fail within two years. One of them won't keep a charge for more than a few minutes, and sometimes powers off when you disconnect the AC power; the other sometimes just shuts down at the slightest movement. When we called the tech support, they didn't mention that the batteries were subject to recall; now I just found out, and Toshiba won't process the recall. I don't know if the problems are battery related, since it'll cost $500 to have Toshiba diagnose the problem. That's right, FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS once it's out of warranty.
The screen on the newer laptop - just two years old - has gone funky, with some horizontal lines.
They both run somewhat warm, with the fan going nonstop.
As you can tell, these are my last Toshiba laptop purchases. It's great value for the first year, so enjoy!
Beware the Satellite [Posted on 2008-11-04] I have had nothing but problems with this product. The computer will shut off unexpectedly, the power cord doesn't work without slapping it around for five minutes, and some days, it just won't work. I've sent this back to get fixed seven or eight times. They refuse to just replace this obvious clunker with a new laptop, and each repair just leads to another problem. One time I they erased my whole hard drive just to fix a broken USB port! Worst product experience ever.
Slow and problematic [Posted on 2008-11-10] This is as slow as a laptop can get. I've already had to have it serviced. I'm quite disappointed.
