No surprises, but who cares? [Posted on 1999-11-29]
Nothing substantially new here, but so what? If you are like me, and just couldn't get enough of Unreal's unique feel, this is just the ticket. The levels are as pretty as ever, and how can you beat the ambiance of that soundtrack? If you're looking for the "latest and greatest," you may be disappointed. But, if you just want another dose of what made the original game so phenomenal, order up a copy.

A great addition for Unreal [Posted on 2000-04-28]
I must strongly disagree with what the critics review at the top was. It sounds like someone who wanted a totally different expansion pack. I don't understand why people review things like this and say "it wasn't completely different." Well, if it were, then it wouldn't be an expansion pack, would it? It would be a new game.

This really is simply an addition, but I think it's a great one. There are a few new weapons: a rocket launcher, a machine gun, and a grenade launcher. Not too bad.

A few new monsters were included too. A space marine that has killer AI. The pack hunter which looks like a baby dinosaur (size of a small dog), and they are FAST. You can't outrun them. Finally, a spider, which is pretty well detailed and usually hidden in dark areas. They spit green acid (or something like that) at you. Pretty easy to kill, but hard to see.

My biggest complaint is the turn speed. You turn down your left/right arrow, then it slowly turns, then picks up. It's almost like a gradual turn. Unreal is much better about this. You will probably want to use your mouse instead. I found this to be particularly annoying.

Overall, I would get this simply because they have added a few quirks to it, and have some new architecture which looks very nice. Plus there are SEVERAL cut scenes. The game starts with one, ends with one, and after each level, your person narrates what he has been through.

This might not blow you away, but if you like expansion packs and understand that they are not designed to reinvent the game, you will probably like this one.

Very well done and if you are a fan of Unreal, you owe it to yourself to give this a shot.

Unreal...........then it continues in return to napali! [Posted on 2002-03-31]
Unreal is a great action packed game!Unreal return to napali is like............ Half-Life compared to Half-Life-opposing-force.
Unreal return to napali features the latest unreal techinical improvements along with 17 brand new single player missions, plus 7 new multiplayer levels, new weapons, aliens, and like the orignal, that type feeling that's right!Plus cinematics!
I would recommend this to any unreal fan!ps.This takes place after the orignal unreal!

Back for more... aren't you? [Posted on 2008-11-09]
If you came to the end of Unreal and wished there were more levels to play "Return to Na Pali" basically grants you that wish! I must confess that upon finishing Unreal I didn't expressly feel that way, I was definitely interested in playing more at some point, but not right away. It wasn't like Half Life, where I came to the end of that game and just couldn't get enough. Basically, if you really liked the feel and game play of Unreal, then you will undoubtedly enjoy playing through "Return to Na Pali", because they haven't changed a thing about the original game play with this addition.

They've given us seventeen new missions to enjoy and I think they've put these together quite well overall. There are also some new interesting elements included as well. One of the ones that I noticed first was the infusion of more of a story line. I've already pointed out that the first game lacked an overall purpose and serious direction, which was really the only thing that put it behind something like Half Life. Well at the end of Unreal we were left floating in space simply hoping someone came upon us for a rescue. Well apparently that sort of happened, however upon recognizing us as a prisoner from Vortex Rikers, we were quickly put in chains again. However, they need us to help them find another downed ship called the Prometheus and since we know the terrain so well... why not have us help? It's either that or they vaporize us on the spot... I guess its back to Na Pali for the time being. Anyway, like Unreal, this works solo, which kind of makes me wonder why we didn't have an escort or something? Oh well... I wasn't expecting a block buster story line with no inconsistencies. I'm just happy to have a real serious purpose and mission other than "find a way out of the game" for once, which a lot of developers seem to enjoy mimicking the original Doom game in that regard. Another cool aspect on this line of thought is that whenever you complete a section of the game it goes into a screen of "Log Entry" where it shows you the total amount of kills up to that point and you get to hear yourself speak about what's been going on! This latter part was a pretty cool addition, in my opinion, and really felt like they tried to give serious perspective to the game.

As advertised on the packaging we get some new weapons and a few new enemies to fight. The new weapons are fairly decent. I didn't care for the grenade launcher much, because it's kind of annoying to try and shoot with any real accuracy. I did enjoy the Rocket Launcher and kind of wished it replaced the 8-Ball in some regards, because this one feels more accurate to use. However, you can't pump it full of 8 rockets and shoot it all at once... so that's a downside. The best new weapon is the Combat Assault Rifle for me. This is my new favorite gun from Unreal. If I could have unlimited ammo with this thing for the whole game I would be very happy. It's smooth, accurate, and very powerful. The new enemies are kind of pathetic though. They added these new little dinosaur like creatures called Pack Hunters. They're extremely fast and annoying to try and fight, for the most part they felt like a nuisance more than an enemy. They also added Spiders to some of the underground aspects, which are kind of cool for an atmosphere type of effect, but I wouldn't consider them anything overly threatening when compared to something like the Skaarj. The Space Marines were definitely the best addition to this game for a new enemy. They were really fun to fight against, but they're only found in one part of the game! I found this incredibly disappointing and would have rather seen them pop up a lot more.

The levels are very well designed as well. I don't think they were nearly as complex as the original full length game, but that's sort of to be expected. A few levels were huge though and that was a welcome sight. There were very few puzzle like situations where you have to do various things in order to enter the next area. You really don't encounter that kind of mapping until you get towards the end of the game. The texturing and rendering is as beautiful as the original and the soundtrack gives you just the right ambience to help immerse you in the game. This is definitely a must play for any Unreal fan and I can only hope they bring this kind of game even further in the future. It looks like they're on the right developmental track and can hopefully crank out more involved games in the future.
