A first-rate picture with a few quirky features [Posted on 2008-03-21] ViewSonic made a huge mistake when including tiny (tinny?) speakers to their monitor because expectations are raised for an integrated video/audio system. Not so. Buy this for its sharp, clean image quality and not with the idea of taking your speakers off your desk. As other reviewers have noted, the sound isn't much better than what you get built into your computer. What *is* fantastic, however, is picture quality and some convenient features: iPod dock, three USB ports, headphone jack, and audio jack. I use the extra features on a daily basis.
Pros: picture quality; wide-screen; size; the convenience of being able to sync and charge an iPod without a separate dock; cool, shiny, high tech black case; incredibly easy to set up; Mac compatible, Leopard and earlier; extra USB ports.
Cons: sound quality; monitor power button that's difficult to see because it blends in with the shiny surface; a separate power button for the ports that, if turned off accidentally, cuts off all the extra features (I leave it on all the time now.)
This monitor is well-worth purchasing if you are looking for a wide-screen LCD screen that combines a few other features. I have had the ViewSonic Monitor for almost four months now, and I haven't had a single problem with it.
iPod Dock Does not Work, Looks Great [Posted on 2008-05-07] Pros: The monitor looks great and has many great features -- card readers, integrated speakers, USB ports and iPod dock.
Cons: I have a new iPod nano with a video screen and it is not recognized when I put it into the dock. I appears to be charging, but the computer is unable to recognized that I have the iPod plugged in. But when I use the official Apple USB cable (plugged into the monior's USB port) it does recognize it. So either my particular monitor is broken (so sad because I threw the box away) or it just won't work with my newer iPod.
Great display with USB ports and a card reader. [Posted on 2008-06-24] Great picture and a much larger display than my 19" Viewsonic VP920b LCD.
Once the monitor is installed in XP Pro and the ATI HD3650 video card drivers setup for the correct 1680x1050 monitor resolution wow it is an impressive display but only when setup with the correct viewing angle. The stand is not adjustable and the viewing angle pointed downwards on my desk. We had to prop up the front with a 1/2" thick piece of wood to get the angle tilted slightly upwards which corrected the viewing angle. Under "Color Adjust" choose the "sRGB" scheme which was a nice display with crystal clear text with no bleeding edges.
With the lower unit power button turned on when XP Pro boots up it detects four new external drives, and then seems tries to scan them for some reason without success. Tried reinstalling the Viewsonic software, a few more things but no help. Solution was to just turn off the power button until the lower ports are needed. The manual just shows these four drives showing up for the card reader without any need to install special drivers for XP.
Did not attempt to test the built in speakers as we already have better speakers connected.
Don't buy it!!! [Posted on 2008-07-01] Am I the only one who got the impression from the box, that you could watch movies from any iPod on this monitor? Yes, I have an iPod synched to my computer to watch movies, but what about my roommates and friends who are not synched to the computer. I thought they could also watch movies from my screen. Boy was I wrong! Get a quality monitor and forget about the iPod dock.
I LOVE This Monitor [Posted on 2008-09-10] I used to have 2 15" monitors. I decided to get rid of one though. Now I have this 22" and my old 15" standing side by side. The difference is ENORMOUS. This monitor is much brighter too. I got it for only $180, which is pretty cheap for a 22". I can look at my photos in almost full res (well it's much more detailed than on a 15" screen). I can watch DVDs and TV on this monitor, and it turns out very sharp, even better than on my TV :).
I didn't really buy the monitor for it's accessories, but I really like them :). It has a speaker, microphone, card reader, ipod dock, and 4 usb ports. The speakers are pretty weak, I haven't tested the microphone. The card reader works with SDHC cards (and is actually pretty fast in downloading the photos). I haven't used the ipod dock since I don't have an ipod yet. The usb ports are really usefull since whenever I need to plug in my mp3 player I don't need to reach all the way over to my computer.
The only problems I had with this monitor is that the cords (DVI and audio) are kind of short. My computer is located far from my monitors so it was a stretch :P. Also there seem to be a few stuck pixels on the very bottom left of the screen, but I don't really care because the start menu is there, (and there are only about 6 of them)
