McAfee has forgotten how to write software [Posted on 2004-05-24] I've used McAfee for years, and liked it better than Norton. However, Version 8 is an absurd step backwards. Unlike previous versions (and all other virus scanners I've seen) you cannot configure automatic scans to not scan network drives or specific directories. There doesn't seem to be a log of what was scanned so there's no way to check what has happened. The script blocker doesn't have any mechanism to specify some scripts as ok to run. Overall this is pretty ridiculous release.
You do have options... [Posted on 2004-06-09] Buy an inexpensive broadband router such as the D-Link DI-604 (this is your firewall) and a copy of PC-cillin from Trend Micro (this is your virus software) and you're good to go.
Hmmm..McAfee [Posted on 2004-06-25] First off I was running a copy of McAfee VirusScan 6 w/Firewall 4 that came pre-installed on my new Dell. All was well for the first year until the 1yr DAT update subscription ran out. I found out that the VirusScan engine had now progressed to version 8. No big deal. I proceeded to download the updates (VScan/Firewall) online which was pretty painless. After upgrading I ran a virusscan and found lots of Adware! Not surprised! VirusScan gave me the option to delete/quarantine as it could not clean them. Word of advice. Don't delete, quarantine! Deleting hosed the LSP configuration on my system as removing adware apparently has a habit of doing! No LSP, no DHCP renewal (have broadband),hence no web access! Then you'll find out that McAfee offer free tech support via online chat room! No good for me as I lost web access! But the very polite customer service told me I can simply access their toll tech support for $2.95/min! Yeah right! McAfee's comment was 'All our competitors offer the same support' when I complained to customer service! I got the LSP layer fixed. Easy fix once you have access to the web (friends PC)! New software does run a lot slower. Older version I thought was more user friendly. And talk about McAfee trying to run the frighteners on you to buy the rest of their 'marketed' software! You don't need it! The McAfee is on a trial run! We'll see what happens! For all you new buyers out there thinking about buying, look elsewhere!
Novelll network user BEWARE [Posted on 2004-07-22] I bought this bundle thinking it was going to work out. I put on my 98 windows machine and it totally trashed some of my programs. It slow my computer down and it would keep freezing my computer.
I got updated to a windows xp (With new computer, new network, etc,) thinking it would solve the problems since 98 was an older version. It installed great. No problems, it seemed to be working. Try to write to the server and nothing. My cyma software was not working properly, Couldn't save any kind of file to the server with either Word perfect 8 and 11. The tax programs would not download correctly and you couldn't update information from disks or cd to the tax programs.
The whole time we thought it was a NOVELL network problems and kept having the computer technitian calling up to find out what was going on.
After two months of frustration and trying everything under the sun, including disabling Mcafee, (which didn't seem to make a difference in the performance or the problems) we decided to try one more thing and once we took Mcafee complete out. EVERYTHING worked perfectly. NO problems what so ever.
If you use a novell network, STAY away from this product. It will act like everything is alright with your c: drive but behind the scenes it's messing with your server and other programs.
No problems [Posted on 2005-01-08] I bought this program because I was having problems with Norton Anti-Virus. I had no problems with the installation. Once it was installed, it found several ad-ware viruses that Norton had missed. Since installation (about a 6-9 months now), my computer has not crashed or been infected by any viruses. I also have not had any problems with the bundled firewall program. I noticed people have had problems with the 2005 version. If I had to buy a different program, I would not use Norton, but would try PC-cillin. Instead of upgrading McAfee, I will just continue to subscribe for the virus uddates.
