Great concept, a couple of issues [Posted on 2008-05-06] I've been running an asterisk server in my home for years, allowing free SIP and IAX access to family around the world. I've always been looking for a Wi-fi device, and took the plunge on this phone.
I was happy with the device's size and interface. The embedded web browser makes it useful to get onto free wifi networks requiring "click to accept" registration, such as in many airports. The build quality felt pretty decent, too.
Battery life was questionable, and it seemed to require re-charging daily regardless of usage.
The built in web server made it useful for configuring the various SIP settings, much easier than using the alpha-numeric keyboard.
SIP connectivity to my asterisk server worked flawlessly, with both incoming and outgoing calls.
The reason I decided to return it was the sound quality. Folks on the other end of the connection said I sounded fine, however on the phone end the speaker was tinny and unnatural, making this feel like a toy. For the price that was unacceptable.
Good Idea but not a finished product. [Posted on 2008-05-31] We were hoping this would be a good adjunct to our new integrated digital voip/landland/network phone system. It's great if you got your computer geek with you to get it signed on as it finds a new wi-fi location, and you don't mind really poor sound quality. Otherwise pass. My people now carry actual phones with a box that coverts cat5 to wireless. They work great, this doesn't. Overpriced, cool looking, not business friendly. Pass on this one wait for a better one. (and we're Linksys lovers...whenever we can we buy Linksys!)
It really is that bad. [Posted on 2008-06-13] It really is as bad as all those negative reviews. Standby time is about 20 hours. It can't seem to connect to some access points. If I set it to send inband DTMF, the 9 key doesn't work, but all the other keys work (I am using ulaw). http://m.yahoo.com doesn't work with the browser at all. Many web pages crash the phone. Very few web pages are usable--it isn't likely I'll be able to navigate the page to activate a hot spot's wireless. The phone has a mystery button on the side that isn't mentioned in the instruction manual--I don't care enough to investigate what it does. Amazon calls it a "Speaker Phone". It isn't a speaker phone. When calling the WIP330, it only rings about 50% of the time, even though it claims to be connected to the access point and registered with my PBX.
poor performances [Posted on 2008-06-20] I bought this WIP330 phone because it was a Linksys... terrible mistake.
- upgrading the firmware is a difficult operation (far from being a one click operation)
- the phone battery is really poor
- the microphone is very bad and people always ask me to repeat what I say unless you shout in the microphone
- the phone regularly disconnect from the router, who knows why?
- linksys support is not up to the standard (I got a replacement and it just is exactly the same, they told me that no quality issue was reported on this device so far).
But : it looks nice, for sure !
The Wip330 iphone is REALLY GREAT [Posted on 2008-06-28] The Wip330 is Really Great. People who are seeing the Wip330 as a BAD WIFI phone. Are People who don't know how to use it(or deal it). Just Ill give you the first bad use for some people, when they recive the phone they don't Charge the battery the right way it might be. Before using it.
THIS IS The Right way MUST BE : The power LED will flash, alternating between blue and purple. For the initial charge, allow the battery to
charge for at least 10 hours, so the battery will have a full charge, which is indicated by a solidly lit power
LED. This maximizes battery performance and life.
This is just only 1 Example of the Bad use
