Looks nice, but otherwise disappointing [Posted on 2007-09-28]
I purchased the i5871 base unit and three i5808 handsets to replace an aging Siemans Gigaset system. Initial impressions are that the system is very stylish and looks good in pretty much any room. However, the handsets are not comfortable to use for long periods of time. The sharp edges are simply not compatible with my ear, and I've gotten similar complaints from other users. The phone book management is archaic at best. It is frustrating to have to update each handset individually. Sound quality is above average, but the handsets are continuously resetting or loosing connection to the base, even standing right next to it. This happens in the middle of phone calls, checking voicemail, or while trying to dial. I've tried Vtech's support recommendations of re-registering the handsets at the base, unplugging everything and letting it reset, and nothing seems to work. Ultimately, I have several hundred dollars invested in a phone system that is just out of warranty and is too unreliable to use. This will most likely be the last Vtech product I purchase.
Overall Great Phone--Scratches Easy [Posted on 2007-11-21]
Overall this is a very good phone. Range is good, voice quality is very good, speakerphone volume is good, battery life is good (3+ hours on speakerphone). I have been very satisfied with this one. The LCD is small but pretty cool--you can set up color codes for various callers that you can easily see across the room.
Downsides are that the finish scratches very easily. The belt clip is a bit fragile. As others mentioned, the phone book management is a bit cumbersome (although this is easy enough to work around).
Overall, highly recommend. Would have given 5 stars if it wasn't for the easily scratched body.

I bought this as a gift for my Mother because I have the same phone & LOVE IT!!! It was such a big hit!!! Programming is a little tedious, but well worth the efforts!! I can't say enough good things about this system.

The Vtech I5808 is best and most versatile phone I have ever owned! I did my research before deciding to purchase an expandable system and this set far exceeds many of the models available from Vtech and its competitors!
This phone system is visually stunning and can fit well with nearly every décor. I love the fact that it does not feature all of the unsightly buttons that clutter up most other phones and the construction is very solid. I have never seen a phone of this type to have brushed metal faceplates and this aspect only reflects the durable interior construction that will last many years of continual use.
The system is completely customizable allowing you to expand up to ten separate handsets. Each phone does not have to plug into a phone jack which makes this system even more versatile as it allows the user to place handsets in any desired location. Having the ability to place a phone in a bathroom, a closet or even the garage offers so many possibilities!
Not only is this set completely customizable, but it has an abundance of features all of which provide a pleasant experience. Each handset can be supplied with a unique ringtone and background image to complement not only the room where it is located, but also the visual interests of the user. Although the main unit features the answering machine and speaker phone capabilities, each handset is also equipped with all of these features and more; you can check/delete/save your messages from any of the handsets and utilize the speaker phone option as well.
Setting up is a breeze and all modifications are a cinch! The included software provides all the necessary tools such as a phone book organizer and image transferring capabilities... this phone system does everything and has made my life so much easier! I have never had any problems with any of the phone's features as they each perform flawlessly every time!
I rely on Vtech to offer excellent products and they have never failed to exceed all of my expectations and more! I cannot recommend this phone system highly enough as it will most definitely satisfy all of your needs and withstand many years of perpetual use.

The vTech i5871 has been featured in the movie 'When a Stranger Calls' and on a few prime-time shows namely, 'Brothers and Sisters'. Unfortunately the phone is horrible!
Errors messages include the following "unable to connect", "searching for base".
