Customer Reviews:

Great deal [Posted on 2008-04-07]
Love this drive. I had the mybook 250 and this 1TB drive is the same form factor and seems to be faster. Bought it for time machine backups and it has worked like a champ. Really like that it comes formatted in HFS so I just plugged it into my Mac and it went to work. Only complaint is that it is slightly louder than my old drive. Not crazy loud just a bit louder and more noticeable. Thinking about buying a 2nd.

Good for the money [Posted on 2008-04-11]
Nice drive for the money. I have an iMac and the Firewire interface does not work with this drive. Used regular USB and works fine.

Excellent external hard drive [Posted on 2008-04-13]
I have owned several external hard drives with mixed results. A couple have just outright failed. This drive has been solid and the price was great. The firewire 800 on my iMac lets me back up my 750GB hard drive in half the time of my USB or other firewire 400 drives. This drive is quiet, well ventilated and yet compact enough to fit in out of the way places. I highly recommend this drive.

Run the other way [Posted on 2008-04-24]
By far the biggest piece of garbage I have ever had the misfortune to purchase. I bought this drive as a backup device because I liked the idea of having both FireWire and USB interfaces. Bad move. The FireWire was flakier than the USB which itself did not perform reliably. Backups would never complete as the drive would go offline and then be unavailable. This drive was unreliable on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 2003 Server. I know it was originally formatted for a MAC - but if it not meant for a Windows environment - don't advertise that it is. Utilities and drivers on WD website are a joke. They consist of a trial version of their backup software that they want you to purchase on top of paying for the drive. Drivers were no where to be found. The only satisfaction I got from this drive was impaling it vampire style with an 18 lb power bar before throwing it in the trash.

Works great, I don't have to think about it. [Posted on 2008-05-14]
I've owned this drive for several months and have had a good experience with it. It's attached via the included FW800-FW400 cable to an Intel iMac. A couple of things worth noting, though:

1. While the exterior may look like metal, it's plastic. The paint looks very nice and it's detailed very well. I have no complaints, just pointing it out.

2. The elongated oval on the front is the power / activity light. It's comprised of several actual LEDs (white), and does a pretty good KITT impersonation. :) The light is bright enough to be an issue if you are sleeping in the same room and prefer it relatively dark. Even when the drive is sleeping, the light throbs in a manner similar to the Mac sleep lights, just much brighter.

3. When the mechanism is spinning it produces a noticeable, but not annoying vibration in the desk surface. Placing the drive on a thin neoprene mouse pad reduces this vibration dramatically.

4. The drive automatically puts itself to sleep when you sleep or shutdown your computer, and will automatically wake with the computer as well.

If I needed more storage tomorrow I'd consider buying another one.
