Let me preface this by saying that I received a lemon. I know that happens, luckily I bought it from amazon, it was an easy return.
I had problems with this drive from the start. It refused to mount my Mac. I had to unplug and plug back in the power and firewire to even get the drive to respond. It would not turn on at all. I finally got it to mount, and reformatted it to the Mac file system.
It is supposed to go to sleep when the computer does, but it does not. It just cuts off after a few hours, and when the Mac resumes, it warns me about improper device removal. After this the drive will only respond when I unplugged it and plugged it back in.
I called western digital and we tried to update the firmware, but that just crashed my Mac.
Check around online about the huge amount of problems, there is even people trying to get together a class action suit against WD about these drives. If you buy a new drive, and have to exchange it with WD, apparently they send you a used model with scratches. I cannot confirm that personally, but read many posts where other people confirmed this.

I guess it is inevitable that these external hard drives will eventually crash. It's almost like you need a backup for you backup. But I lost all of my music, videos, documents, and pictures with no way of getting them off back. All it does now is click when you plug it in (Head Crash). However it is a good product until it crashes and it will crash!!!
Power Failure After 9 months [Posted on 2008-07-14]
I purchased this drive 9 months ago and used it every couple of weeks for backups -- in my opinion, light use. Last week, it failed to respond when I hit the start button. I called WD Tech Support (Level 2) and they immediately sent me a new power cord, hoping that would solve the problem. It didn't, and they offered to replace the drive immediately.
I consider the service commendable but the equipment marginal.

We purchased this in April 2007 and by mid-2008 it had stopped working. An apparent power failure. After contacting the manufacturer we were told to send the whole unit back. Since we're not crazy about shipping our confidential data to "who knows who," we'll be purchasing a different backup system - not Western Digital -- ever.
What a way to waste $230.

I bought this particular My Book Pro on April 17, 2007. Last Monday, July 28, 2008, it died. There was no warning and no apparent cause. I wouldn't recommend this drive to my worse enemy.
