Don't bother using this storage in anything but mirrored configuration. I bought three of them, and only 1 that works properly.
WD Anywhere Access is a joke. Completely pointless, unnecessarily complicated, and did I mention pointless. Spare yourself hours of misery, and just use Live FolderShare for the Windows users out there. You need a PC running it on the network (so it doesn't run on the drive) but works a billion times better.
Talking about unreliable. The one 1TB has died completely. Powering on just results in a irritating ticking sound (probably a drive failure). On my other 1TB I get the now infamous "Drive B Failed" status message, which indicates that the software thinks there is something wrong, but amazingly - I can still use ALL the storage. I am now moving everything off this 1TB onto a third 1TB, which is currently still OK.
Really disappointed, as this drive has so much potential. I love the idea of NAS storage, and sadly there just aren't that many good options out there. This is yet another one to skip.

This hard drive was storing thousands of family photos, some as from as far back as the late 1800s. The photo library I entrusted to this piece of junk included parents, grandparents, great-grandparents... family from around the world.
I'd been scanning them for years, making repairs to the oldest and storing them all.
And six months after I got it, it died. EVERYTHING GONE.
In a panic, I did a search for any of the pictures I'd lost... and found them all on another drive. Seems one of my backup programs had grabbed the entire library even though it wasn't supposed to. Everything that had been added to the library from the time the backup grabbed a copy of the library to the time the drive failed was still stored on my camera and on my phone.
The luck. It's absolutely staggering how unbelievably lucky that was.
It still left me with a hunk of useless, six month old crud. I sent it back into WD and they replaced it with a refurbished one that I don't trust as far as I can throw it. See the current price up there? WD held the full, original retail price against my credit card until the failed drive arrived at their end... and they made me pay for the shipping.
This drive was:
- Kept in an air conditioned environment.
- Never moved, dropped, or damaged
- Free from spills, debris, and moisture
- Free from vibration and magnetic fields
- Plugged into a UPS
This isn't the first WD MyBook hard drive I've bought that has proven unstable under similar conditions. I will never buy another WD product.

*Moral: Keep backups of your important data. I've never heard of anyone getting so lucky that their irreplacable data was accidently backed up before, and I doubt I ever will again. I've the data on two drives now - yes, one is the refurbished drive, and I trust it so little I'm in the process of putting everything onto DVDs.
This drive is a piece of junk [Posted on 2008-11-17]
I have had this hard drive for several years. I returned the first one I bought because I could not get my computer to recognize the drive after I connected it up. Thinking it was a bad drive, I exchanged it for another one and this time after much effort, I was able to make my computer recognize the drive. Since my OS was the new Vista at the time, I attributed my problems to a faulty driver. However, after running this external hard drive for several years, I find the drive runs very hot and then the loud cooling fan kicks in ... and I mean loud. At least once a day and sometimes several times a day the drive gets so hot it shuts down. When it does I have to disconnect the electrical power from the drive as well as the USB and let it sit for fifteen minutes or longer to cool off before I can reconnect it. Also, I have found many of the movies I record seem to lock up and release, lockup and release to the point I have to delete the movie. From watching the monitor on the front of the drive, it appears that the drive reads the movie file, and then stops for a while and then reads the movie file again and then stops..etc. I run a virus check on my computer once a day and this generally shuts my drive down before it completes reading the entire drive. The bottom line is I think this drive is a piece of junk.

I had this unit a year and have never been satisfied. My goal was to have a common backup location for everyone on my LAN to share The unit always was very slow when reading or writing. More importantly recently I had one of the two hard drives fail . Should have been no problem since I was using RAID to mirror drives. WD did send out a replacement within a few days however after a lot of go arounds with WD tech support it turns out the second drive was also corrupted . I lost a tremendous amount of information I thought was totally secure. Very unreliabile. I would give this unit a zero (0) if I could . Do not rely on for data protection. Also this unit does not stream media files

I've had this for a few months now. The installation was reasonably easy, and I have the same complaints about mionet that everyone else has. However, the device simply goes offline intermittently for no reason. When this happens the front on/off switch also stops responding so the only way to reset it is to unplug and the plug it back in. Now it is useless to me as a backup or storage device. My only actions of recourse now are to return the unit or find another SATA NAS enclosure and use the drives that came in it. If I had to buy this device again I never would have.
