If you can't get to the course... [Posted on 2000-06-22] As an avid disc golfer, I was excited to see that there was finally a computer game based on the sport. If you can get past the title (the game is put out by Wham-o, so it makes sense they would call it "Frisbee" golf, although it makes purists cringe), it is a good way to pass a few hours. You can tell that the efforts of the programmers went into the graphics. Courses have good texture, as well as the common obstacles (lots of trees) of a disc golf course. However, there are some things that were overlooked that would have made this a first-rate game. First, there are only three discs to choose from: a driver, a mid-range, and a putter, all of which are perfectly stable. Second, your release can only be directly at the catcher. If you have an obstacle right in front of you, it would be nice to be able to turn to the right and put some hyzer on the disc, like the finesse shots players use on the real course. Third, there is no indication as to the distance to the pin or whether the catcher is above or below you. There is a small overehead map in ht ecorner of the screen, but no angle or distance meter. Although it is no substitute for the real thing, I do enjoy playing the computer game. I am looking forward to the updated version that takes a bit more realistic approach to the game. Maybe Innova or Discraft would put something out that lets you use their specific discs with their inherent stability characteristics, which would do two things - sell a product and promote their line of discs.
