Seemed like the perfect device until . . . [Posted on 2008-01-27] I loved this deviced when I first purchased it. Small, solid, streamlined. No video screen to add to the list of things that could go wrong. Just unblemished, easy photo backup for the photographer abroad.
It backed up seamlessly on a recent trip to Thailand, verifiying and promising me a hassle free trip. I backed up 60GB worth of images and returned to the US. Only to find that 2/3 of the images were corrupted on the disk.
Wolverine tech support was rude and condescending. Kept repeating that I had done something wrong, without being specific as to what that could have possibly been. Also kept repeating that I just had to mail it in, but no guarantees.
I ultimately brought it to a data recovery center which pulled off all of the data for $300 and told me that the disk had been faulty.
So ultimately can I recommend this? Well, perhaps I just had a dud. I know they can happen. I was burned though, not just by the devices failure but by the company's rudeness and unwillingless to offer data recovery.
Wolverine is off of my list. Hopefully they can do better by the next consumer.
Great product, great price on Amazon [Posted on 2008-03-14] This is a very handy product. I have a 1GB CF card, a 2GB CF card, and a 1 GB SD card for my cameras and palm pilot. The Wolverine is great for taking all my RAW images in the field to free up my CF cards for more shots.
Operation is extremely simple. Turn it on, stick the card in, press "copy", and you're done! At 80GB, it will take me quite a while to fill up. I plan to take this baby to my Peru and Africa trip later this year.
I gave it a 4-star because the copying speed is a bit on the slow side. If you are shooting in a fast-moving environment, and you only have one memory card, then you'd be missing the action while the Wolverine is making the copy from your card. Other than that bit of limitation, I'm very happy with the product.
Stopped working [Posted on 2008-05-06] Stopped working on the 3rd card I plaqced in it, in the middle of a wedding. Am returning.
Avoid this product [Posted on 2008-06-30] The predecessor of the model 7080 was the model 7008, also 80 GB. I bought one in January 2007 to store digital photos on long trips. In May 2008 the hard drive failed, losing about 1,300 photos of a trip to Japan. Of course, the reason to use such a product in the first place is to safeguard photos from loss. This company's product caused the worst kind of failure: permanent loss of irreplaceable photos.
Works as advertised...and great price, too [Posted on 2008-09-23] This little device (very light and small, so fits quite easily in any camera bag) is very helpful. For the price of a couple of 8GB compact flash cards, you can hold the equivalent of 10 8GB cards.
I haven't used in the "field" yet, but in the tests I've conducted with it (on a Mac and a PC), the FlashPac uploads and downloads quickly and efficiently.
I recommend this product to anyone who needs extra storage on the go.
