Nice quiet fan that's a pain and a half to put on... [Posted on 2008-02-16] I got this fan because I figured I'd need to upgrade the factory fan that came with my Intel Q6600 2.4Ghz proc. Let me break this review down into two parts for simplicity: 1) installation, and 2) actual usage.
Installation...
This was a nightmare. It's worse if you're upgrading your CPU and fan or just the fan itself since the fan requires (I'm using a Socket 775 board) this two piece bracket, one side being on the back of the motherboard. I actually did manage to place the back piece (I guided it through with my fingers as carefully as I could and then just lined up one of the screw holes to lock it down) without having to remove the board but it's definitely something that's easier done on a new install or if you're okay with pulling everything out of the motherboard and just working outside the case.
The REAL nightmare was securing the actual fan to the bracket. They rely on this metal piece that's been moulded a certain way such that you need to partially screw in one end then push down hard on the other end...not for the faint of heart since your CPU is wedged in between the fan and the board...It can be done but it took a number of attempts to get this working right. You can try to bend the metal piece (assuming you have a vise) but then you risk the fact that it might not hold the fan in place if you're setting your box up vertically.
Also, it relies on a rather cheap little box with a dial that lets you adjust the fan speed. Interesting idea but it's not exactly designed to work with all cases (it's just attached to a power cable that you put between the main fan power cable and the board)...at first I tried popping a slot cover and threaded the cable through but this seemed stupid in the end since I just cranked it and left it at the same speed continuously. In the end, I just stashed it inside the case somewhere...it's easy enough to get into the case to change this if needed. This would have been better off as a control panel or app that I could run rather than this hardware switch...
Actual usage...
Once you've got it on the board, it works like a charm. I haven't benchmarked it while under heavy load but then again, I'm not seeing artifacts or hanging so I'm guessing it's well within tolerances. Dialing it up to near max speed, it runs quiet as a dream...I was actually shocked because even though my box was already pretty quiet (I'm using an antec case with two big 120mm's) after installing this and a new PSU, I could barely tell that the box was on (yeah, the lights gave it away).
All in all, I'd recommend the fan but not the installation. If you're building a new box, then no worries really (just make sure you're careful with that metal strip). If you're upgrading a well-established box, then keep in mind you'll likely have to pop the motherboard out to install this.
Sencillamente Asombroso!
Its really pretty awesome [Posted on 2008-03-26] The moment i saw this LED cpu in a PC a few weeks ago i just had to have it! At least if it was good, So i spent about two weeks looking around review sites and sellers sites etc. until i found a good deal the moment i did i bought it with ought hesitation, This product is top of the line! My idle CPU temp went from 85c to 29c.... Thats insane!
Under load i cant EVER get it over 39c even with the fan on its lowest setting! Im running a dual core chip too!
The installation was easy ONLY if you know what your doing because to install it you will have to take EVERY piece of hardware out of your computer and install the bracket on the backside of the mobo and put it all back in! If your not leet just pay 20 bucks to a PC store to do it for ya.
anyway this is a great product and i love it sooo much
btw it DOES come with thermal compound
i purchased the Arctic Silver 5 compound with it but it dident come on time so i just used the compound that came with the cooler and wait til i get a new mobo for the arctic....
Excellent Cpu Cooler [Posted on 2008-05-24] excellent simply excellent, my processor is kept on 67 Degrees, now under up to 40 degrees, is a good product we recommend
Nice and cool looking [Posted on 2008-06-16] Mounting time, half hour from the moment I took the motherboard out of the case and started reading the manual. very easy and very secure.
i didn't use the control thing that came with it, just simply connected the cable directly to the motherboard CPU FAN connector, and its speed is being automatically controlled by the computer's BIOS.
very silent and very nice looking, the fins are very very thin (0.2mm!!) you can get your self cut easily, or badly bend them, must handle and mount the fan with care.
CPU temprature dropped 4 degrees on idle state and 7 degrees on heavy load, you may say not much of a difference from the original intel that I had, but I have the Thermaltake Armor+ Case with 5 140mm fans and one 125mm fan, so there is already excellent cold airflow inside the case, to be hoenst, I was surprised that the temprature difference was this much, i was thinking i might get 2 or 3 degrees difference only.
