Extreme Makeover for Computer Games [Posted on 2008-08-01] I'm not a heavy gamer, but this monitor sure has definitely got me fragging again! When I was a kid I tried using another company's 3d LCD shutter glasses just so I could try to emulate that 3D effect I saw back in Universal Studios, etc at their 3d movies. They were always a pain, not very effective, and basically nothing more than a silly novelty compared to where stereoscopic 3d has gone in recent years. I tried the Emagin visor after reading about it and ended up selling it back because of the low resolution. With the Iz3D I can play games in stereoscopic 3d in full resolution at a very decent screen size with no flicker.
Iz3D even provides a video player and an image player for playing comercial or home-brew 3d movies. Their drivers are very compatible with most games and once you adjust the settings you can minimize, but not eliminate, the stereoscopic ghosting in most games (when you see an overlap from the two images being sent to your eyes, not regular monitor ghosting). Stereoscopic 3d amounts to eye candy that has the potential to breathe life back into old games and make new ones totally imersive and amazing.
A couple problems... As of this review PunkBuster has a hard time with the Iz3d drivers (1.08), although the company is promising better compatibility with PB in the next driver release for more compatible stereoscopic multiplayer. Most games I've played run great on the monitor, although there are a few that I cant get to work with it, such as Prey and Team Fortress 2 (which is strange because HL2 and the other valve games work fine). And lastly... I'm really hoping they fine tune the driver to make the focus more perfect and reduce even more the stereo ghosting effect.
All in all I have been very satisfied with this purchase. It is incredibly easy to install and a great gaming addition. Full resolution 3d gaming is stunning. Before the Iz3D I've never felt the sensation that I was really in the game until I plugged this monitor in and loaded up COD4... I nearly fell out of my chair looking out the door of my helicopter as it crashed to the ground. The monitor takes gaming to a whole other level, its sturdy and works great as a 2D display as well. I currently use it as my main monitor to watch DVDs and I also use it for media production work as it has plenty of screen surface. I had to knock a star for compatibility issues and for drivers that are still not quite perfect... but judging from their user forums the people at Iz3D seem to be hard at work constantly working on their driver technology, showing a great commitment to their customer base... A very good sign for future compatibility and functionality.
Great monitor [Posted on 2008-11-21] When I first bought it a few months ago it was cool but had a lot of issues still. Since then the majority of those issues have been fixed from driver updates.
The only real remaining problem (for my purposes at least, I play World of Warcraft and everything else works great) the current glasses cause a bit of color distortion which are supposedly going to be remedied in a month or so with a new glasses design (you can order them individually off their sight). A little Ghosting too but that has improved dramatically since I first got the monitor to the point that its not too noticeable.
Its a 5 still without the newer glasses because the effect is so awesome and revolutionary, and with the glasses I anticipate it being excellent. Maybe a few more tweaks in future driver updates, perfect.
