MagicJack - Not that Magic [Posted on 2008-07-03] I have read a number of reviews from this site. It appears someone working for MagicJack have written them. My experience has not been positive. First, MagicJack will not work with Windows XP SP3. No exceptions. Second, I have been able to call out but no one can call in. In coming calls, "All circuits are busy" "Network is busy" It appears MagicJack has over sold their capacity to handle calls. The interface is very good. Good concept but poor execution. This product is not what is being advertised from my experience. Skype is still better or Sipphone.
Watch out Skype and Vonage! [Posted on 2008-07-09] First setup took less than a minute - this includes choosing an area code and prefix number. Since then have tried the unit on 9 diffrent XP/Vista machines as well as a Mac and it came up and performed flawlessly.
Seven of my friends bought them and they too say it was extremely easy. Those with dual line phones simply connected the phone jack of the device to the second line. I even connected it to my house phone wiring and tried it from a variety of phones in our house - no problem. Sound quality has been very good on all calls made. Call forwarding (very useful if your PC/Mac is not on) went straight to my cell phone. The free, included voice mail worked well; it even sends an email when you have a message.
I heard their technical support was lacking so I connected (using their chat line) to ask a question. Got an almost immediate response. My question was whether you can use more than one magicJack on the same machine (you cannot it turns out).
The phone companies have a lot to worry about with this unit!
Magic Jack- Buy It, Try It, Love It [Posted on 2008-07-12] The Magic Jack is definitely worth it's weight in gold. I heard about this product from my neighbor several months ago and was unsure if it would actually do all that it claimed. After seeing the information and reading what others had to say about the product, I thought I'd give it a try. Afterall, I had 30 days to test it out and to request a refund.
I promptly ordered the Magic Jack on line and received it 2 days later. At first, I was disappointed because I couldn't connect it to my USB port, until I realized that I needed the extension that came along with it. Once connected, I was able to follow the step-by-step directions to setup all of my features.
I contacted their customer service/tech support on several occasions with minor questions/problems and had no problems with getting prompt and direct service. This product is definitely going to save me money. My basic phone service with Verizon (local calls for .09 with no calling features, or long distance) was costing me $30/month even though I only made $3 in monthly calls. All of my money was going to surcharges. My thoughts on the product are as follows:
Likes:
1. $[...] for the first year and only $[...] each year thereafter.
2. I have all of the calling features included in Verizon's bundled packages without the high cost.
3. Magic Jack is portable- connect anywhere w/highspeed internet and a USB port.
4. Calls are automatically sent to your voicemail & are alerted via e-mail if your pc/laptop is off or you don't answer the phone.
5. Customer Service/Tech Support is easy to contact and helpful in resolving problems
6. Bluetooth/Headset enabled
Dislikes:
1. Must dial area code to where you are calling, even if it is local.
2. When calling out, there is a delay of approx. 20 seconds before phone connects.
3. There is no phone number to tech support because it is supported online.
4. Must register your address for 911 purposes whewnever you move locations. This can be done by going to http://my.magicjack.com.
Bottom Line: Buy it, try it, you'll love it
Crystal clear ines, free calls. [Posted on 2008-07-14] I bought this and it is now my main home phone. I bought a $30 cordless 5.8 Mhz phone (to keep from interfering with my 2.4 Mhz wireless adaptor) with a secondary handset, so we do not use the house land line wires at all. Reception is crystal clear. We did find some spotty communications on our son's computer, but they were running games and tons of background software. On my computer, it runs no games or viruses, etc, and it is flawless. We are planning on getting one to send to the Philippines so we will not have to spend $60 a month on phone cards. Our family in the Philippines has DSL and a computer so we will soon have free unlimited calls to the Philipines. I also plan to use it when I travel to Australia later this year so I can call home for free. It is a revolutionary product because of its revolutionay price and ease of use.
Good VOIP Service [Posted on 2008-07-16] We've been using MagicJack since May and it's provided decent service. Installation only involved plugging the device into the computer. Call quality is decent, but for what you pay it's pretty good.
MagicJack is installed on the home computer and using a Panasonic 3-Phone system to call out.
The MagicJack window pops up when ever the phone is activated. We found a little tool on Google to block the popup window called MagicBlock, works like a charm.
We've tried Skype, Vonage and found MagicJack to be a good VOIP solution.
